ness and Wellness Center. According to
Hubbard, that building would cost $29
million to build, in addition to the $9
million used to acquire the land.
Hubbard said the schedule for build
ing that facility was being reconsidered.
“The timetable we had of about two
years from now is under review,” Hub
bard said.
He said surveys showed that about
80 percent of the university’s students
enjoy physical recreation, and the uni
versity was building the new center to
provide for that recreation.
“The sole purpose of that facility is
for the recreation of the students and for
the health and wellness of the students,”
Hubbard said.
He said the new projects would
“change the face” of the university.
“It’s an exciting day for the univer
sity,” Hubbard said.

Senator proposes rebuke of Bob Jones
by David Espo
Associated Press
Washington — The head of the Senate
Democratic campaign committee says he
will try to force a vote critical of Bob Jones
University, the school at the heart of a
racial and religious controversy in the GOP
presidential race.
“George Bush has not had the last
word on Bob Jones University’s outra
geous comments about Catholics, mi
norities or other Americans,” Sen. Bob
Torricelli, D-N.J., said Wednesday.
Torricelli’s proposal accuses the uni
versity of enforcing a segregationist pol
icy by prohibiting the free association of
interracial couples on campus. It also al
leges that officials of the university have
likened the pope to a “possessed demon. ”
Torricelli’s proposal condemns “prac
tices, such as those prevalent at Bob Jones
University” that are discriminatory.
The school is a Christian university
in Greenville, S.C., that prohibits inter
racial dating and is accused by its critics
of being anti-Catholic. The institution lost
its tax-exempt status in the 1970s because
of racial discrimination.
“The only people it affects are the
people who choose to attend here,” school
spokesman Jonathan Pait said. “Why Bob
Jones university has the policy is not an
issue. The issue is, does a religious insti
tution in the United States of America
have die right to believe something? That
goes to the top of the Constitution.”
Bush campaigned at Bob Jones there
earlier this month as part of an effort to
win votes in the South Carolina presi
dential primary, which he won handily
over John McCain. His visit drew criti
cism from Democrats as well as GOP ri
vals McCain and Alan Keyes, both of
whom have said the Texas governor should
have challenged the school’s policy and
viewpoints while on ffanrpus.
Bush, interviewed earlier in the day
on ABC, said, “When I went there, I
got off an airplane and went in there and
gave my speech.... I don’t have to accept
their tenets. I was trying to get those col
lege students to accept my tenets,” he
said.
McCain’s campaign contacted voters
in Michigan with recorded phone mes
sages, criticizing Bush for appearing at the
school. One Democratic political official
criticized Sen. John Ashcroft of Missouri
recently for having accepted an honorary
degree from the school.
