Whereas / Can Hear the Heart focused itself on being unfocused musically by not committing to a single genre, And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out doesn't quite turn their sound inside out, but rather takes a cross section of the softer side of Yo La Tengo's work. It's a perfectly crafted love album — beauti fully slow and sweet; a walk, hand in hand, down memory lane for husband and wife, guitarist Ira Kaplan and drummer Georgia Hubley. Their soft and mellow voices provide a channel directly from the heart as they pay testament to memories of their years together and a love that is forever grow mg. Their marriage has remained as smooth over the years as the soothing harmonies and hypnotic rhythms that Yo La Tengo so effortlessly produce with And Then Nothing, their ninth album. Hub ley's voice resonates at barely above a whisper on one of the gems of the album, “You Can Have It All,” as Kaplan provides a chorus of “ba-bas” over a church oigan and marimba-style drum sam ples. Their voices have never sounded as sweetly shy and heartfelt, and they seem to often get swept up in the music, or perhaps more the memories. Whichever it is, they pour their heart and soul into every word, and you can almost imagine one hanging on the words of the other. Bassist James McNew seems to relish his diminished role and cherish the fact that his friends are expressing how they feel toward each other. More or less, the atmospheric, feedback-heavy, sonic mess that Yo La Tengo toyed with on past al bums is gone. “Cherry Chapstick,” a “Sugarcube” esque feedback-heavy jam seems to be the only track to capture that sound. “Our Way To Fall” finds Kaplan fondly re membering his first encounter with Hubley. He takes the listener on a step-by-step walk with him on his first, painfully shy approach toward that pretty girl across the room, looking down at his shoes and trying not to blush. It really is quite re freshing to see musicians so honest about their feel ings and their love for one another. On “The Crying Lot of G,” Kaplan lets loose with his reservations and deepest feelings for his wife. He thinks aloud, in the sincerest of voices, about all the little things that bother him about their relationship. But despite their differences, their love is deep enough that faults and blame are meaningless. “You don’t have to smile at me, you don’t have to talk. All that I ask of you is that you stop and remember it isn’t always this way.” And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is a gushy and infectious love record. It will either remind you of your own sweetheart or leave you longing to share in the wealth of love that Kaplan and Hubley seem to have for each other. It is an achingly beautiful album that might just make you blush or sigh while getting caught up in the mo ment. Artist: Yo La Tengo Album: And Then Nothing...
