The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin
Moshing. You hate it, right?
We hate it ourselves.
You want to defy moshing? Hey, we want to de
fy moshing. We have never fully understood this dance
scene. We’re down with the whole “music flowing
through you” vibe, but when did it get so damn vio
lent? We think it was at the craze of the grunge mu
sic scene. Music was getting louder and faster, and peo
ple couldn’t just bop their heads to the music anymore.
So what happened?
In a show in Seattle, some guy in a crowded club
tripped over a beer bottle. He fell into this other guy
who, in turn, fell into another guy.
And it seemed to cause a chain reaction.
Several people collided that night, and the music
world would’nt be the same after that. This “pit” of
people faljing into each other was an exhilarating ex
perience for all in attendance that night, so they just
kept doing it. Strangers would just run from one side
of the club and hit some guy on the other side. Even
tually, the space was reduced to a circle, but you see
where this led, right? This blunder started a new dance
craze that had Advil and Tylenol screaming for en
dorsements. People were getting incredible kicks by
simply smashing themselves into other people dur
ing a rock show. You were either in the mosh pit or
you were trying to get away from it. Moshing and
grunge went hand in hand (note how we don’t men
tion metal, because in our ignorance, we don’t know
if moshing was ever really a metal scene. It could have
started there, for all we know). Then, one day, grunge
died. But in the same manner as any revolution, some
people decided to carry on with the spirit of grunge.
These people forget that the last true grunge al
bum was released in 1996. Face it, guys, it s dead.
Enough with the moshing, already. Why do you still
insist that the spirit of grunge lives on? Why do you
still insist to fomi a mosh pit at the drop of a hat? Why
do you still insist that running into us is cool? It isn’t.
Some of you were at the Hank Williams III and
Reverend Horton Heat show Thursday night at the
Music Farm. You thought it was cool to start moshing
when Hank III started playing. Sure, he was clad in a
Misfits shirt, and sure, he was playing some pretty
rough stuff, but come on. You were moshing to Hank
Williams ID! It’s a sad, sad day in rock music when the
grandson of Hank Williams can inspire you to mosh.
Just what were you thinking? Or have more than
one of these collisions to the floor deprived you of this
ability? Let’s look at stage diving. It doesn’t happen
anymore. People realized that they weren’t going to
be caught anymore, and they stopped.
Let’s pick apart the act of moshing for a second
here: The music starts, you hear it and you start jump
ing around and hitting strange people. They might not
want you to do it, but you don’t care. You do it any
way. You know, they make rubber rooms for behav
ior like this. The fact of the matter is, you’re just be
ing rude. You’re hitting people, for Pete’s sake (have
we said this yet?) You’re hitting people! Why? They
don’t ask you to hit them. They certainly didn’t pay
in anticipation to get hit by you morons.
“Ooh. I can’t wait to get to the show and have
some MORON hit me while I try to enjoy the music.
I am getting anxious just thinking about it.”
Sounds stupid, doesn t it?
Now, we don’t want to deprive you of free will or
anything because we are huge champions of this (as
you have read in past rants.) Just stop hitting us. That’s
all we ask. We can understand this course of action if
you’re at a NOFX show. Moshing should be expect
ed there. But when there is a possibility for a mixed
crowd, give everyone their space and respect their de
sire to watch a show. You can’t really take it all in when
there are idiots running into you the whole time. In
fact, it makes you want to turn around and run at them
with all your might and... wait a minute.
By the way, welcome back, Dave. It’s good to see
you.
