The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin
I —MM—M¥i I
It is mid-February, as we dearly hope all of you
know, and this is a time of the year where the uni
versity has a lot going on. We would like to'take note
of some of these events so you, in being aware of them,
can be all the student you can be.
Fust of all, the Student Government elections will
be held Thursday. While this might be a cheap attempt
at self-publicity, we would still like to encourage all
of you to carefully read over the candidates’ platforms
that are printed in this issue of The Gamecock. We
won’t tell you who to vote for because that would be
unethical and fascist. We will encourage you to se
lect a candidate who makes sense to you. Choose the
person who doesn’t want to change every aspect of
this campus. We all know that a candidate’s power,
while important, is limited. All power is limited. So
vote for the person who seems to have a sensible plan
for the advancement of this campus.
Don’t vote for someone just because he or she is
in your fraternity, sorority, student organization or
what have you. This “buddy system” might have worked
in high school, but it shouldn’t hold merit at the col
legiate level. We can’t stress this enough! Do not vote
for a buddy. The only time you should vote for a
buddy is if this buddy of yours looks like the best can
didate. We would hate to think that our next president
is elected because he or she was in a fraternity, soror
ity or popular student organization.
We guess we should also encourage you to do the
obvious: just vote. One of the biggest problems that
faces this campus is student apathy. So don’t sit aside
and watch the fate of your university go to the hands
of a candidate you don’t agree with. If you don’t vote,
you can’t complain, and don’t you see how much
fun complaining is? The voting process has been made
much easier this year. You don t have to walk to
your "district" to vote. You just plant your butt in front
of a computer for a few seconds. We all do this every
day, so this shouldn’t be too troublesome. Just visit the
StudentGovemment Vvfeb site (www.sa.sc.edu/g5a/sg.htm)
and plug in your votes. This cuts down on the paper,
time and inconvenience for people to vote. Now, there
is no damn excuse for you not to vote, so do it.
In addition to Student Government elections, we
would like to remind everyone that February is Black
History Month... duh. Wfe would like to encourage all
of you to join in the celebration of African-Ameri
can heritage. It is no surprise that Black History Month
falls in the same month as Valentine’s Day because that
is what this month is all about, love. Love of your her
itage and of other people is what makes February (al
though the shortest) one of the most rewarding months
of the year. Don’t be ignorant of other people and then
history. Embrace everyone as fellow Americans and
as fellow human beings.
By the way, WUSC is now adding new DJs to the
large squad that already serves the station. You could
expect to hear WUSC operating nearly 24 hours a day
in the upcoming weeks. If you like WUSC, this is a
good thing. If you don’t like WUSC, seek help... NOW.
How could you not like WUSC? Only if you’re an au
tomatronic moron who likes to be spoonfed all pos
sible ideas and thoughts from an outside and uncaring
source would you not like WUSC. Then again, we’re
biased... heavily biased. As you can tell, Encore has
oeen working closely witn tne oest station in Colum
bia, and we do so because we think it deserves the
press, and because you deserve to know about it. That’s
how much we love you.
Finally, we would like to uige you to pick up a
copy of the Garnet & Black, another one of our Stu
dent Media cousins. This issue looks as good as the
magazine has ever looked. It contains some incredi
ble poetry, photography, fiction and art. Get some cul
ture in your lives and pick up the Garnet & Black.
Come on, it’s free. Read something, for Christ’s
sake. It’s just another way Student Media gives you
the most for your dollar.
Until next week, God’s mercy on all you swine.
