New YORK - Television funnyman
David Letterman was cracking jokes
in his hospital room Saturday as he re
covered from emergency quintuple by
pass surgery the from day before.
“I feel fantastic. In addition to rerout
ing the arteries, they also installed an E
Z Pass,” Letterman, 52, said, joking about
the commuter toll passes.
Among the cards from well-wish
ers were flowers from President Clin
ton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, who
appeared on his show Wednesday.
Doctors ordered the suigery Friday
after an angiogram showed that one of
Letterman’s arteries was severely con
stricted. He had the test because of high
cholesterol and a history of heart dis
ease in his family.
“Dave’s doing great,” said Dr. 0.
Whyne Isom, chairman of cardiothoracic
suigery at the Weill Cornell Center of
New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
“He’s making jokes and feels terrific.
He’s on his way to a full recovery.”
Letterman’s physician and cardiol
ogist have said it’s too soon to say how
long the comedian will need to recu
perate.
CBS plans to air reruns of the “Late
Show” until he recovers.
Letterman joked about his arteries
with guest Regis Philbin during the pro
gram that was taped on Thursday and
aired Friday, joking that after his tests,
doctors might have to “open Daddy’s
rib cage.”
Houston caught with pot

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Whitney
Houston was caught with 15.2 grams of
marijuana at an airport security check
point last week but boarded her depart
ing flight before police officers arrived,
a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Tribune-Herald of Hilo, Hawaii,
said an airport security officer at Kea
hole-Kona International Airport found
the marijuana Tuesday after he asked the
Grammy-winning singer to open her bag
for inspection. The bag was seized, but
the singer walked away when security
officers tried to detain her, Lt. Robert
Hickcox said.
Houston’s United Airlines flight to
San Francisco departed 45 minutes be
fore police officers arrived, Hickcox
said.
Airport security officers, employed
by a private company, can only arrest
passengers for crimes related to airport
security. The firm, Whckenhut of Hawaii,
declined comment to The Associated
Press on Sunday night.
An answering service for Houston’s
spokeswoman, Carol Stone, said Stone
was out of the country and couldn’t im
mediately be reached for comment. A
message left with her answering service
wasn’t immediately returned on Sunday
night to the AP.
According to the newspaper, the
Hawaii County Police Department’s dai
ly police bulletin noted that 15.2 grams
of marijuana was recovered at the air
port at 2:28 p.m. Tuesday, but didn’t
identify a suspect.
Police officers planned to refer the
case to the Hawaii County prosecutor’s
office, a process that could take a month,
Hickcox told the newspaper.
Police officers declined to comment
to the AP late Sunday.
Officials at Arista Records, Hous
ton’s record label, couldn’t be reached
for comment in either Los Angeles or
New York on Sunday night.
rus*asiuii 01 1 j grams ui maiijua
na could lead to a drug chaige of pro
motion of a detrimental drug, Hickcox
said. The petty misdemeanor is pun
ishable by up to 30 days in jail and a
$1,000 fine.
Houston has sold millions of records
and is one of the world’s most success
ful recording artists. She has also starred
in such films as “The Bodyguard” and
“Whiting to Exhale.”
She was nominated this month for
four Grammy awards for her latest al
bum, “My Love is Your Love.”
