Fraternities to hold spring rush
by Kelly Haggerty
Assistant News Editor
Once again, the time has come for fra
ternities’ and sororities’ spring recruit
ment.
Fifteen of the 19 fraternities will be
recruiting new members from 8 to 10 p.m.
Jan. 18 to 20 in McBryde Quad.
Director of Greek Life Gena Staggs
said it would be more relaxed than it is
in the fall. i
“Basically, it’s very informal. Any guy
can just show up and visit any fraternity
that they want to,” Staggs said
Unlike fall recruitment, which re
quires rushees to meet all fraternities par
ticipating in formal rush, spring recruit
ment allows interested males to talk to
the participating fraternities that they want
to meet. This will take place Jan. 18 and
19. Students must be invited back Jan. 20
and can talk only to those fraternities to
which they received invitations.
“I would encourage students to start
at one end of the Quad and work their way
around” Staggs said “They should try to
talk to all fraternities. They should ask
questions about community service, schol
arship and leadership,” Staggs said

The four traditionally black fraterni
ties also elect to do their own advertis
ing for recruitment instead of participat
ing in the organized event at McBryde.
Fraternities housed in the Quad will
be stationed in their lounges. Other fra
ternities will set up tents in the courtyard.
“Everyone puts out a nice spread,
maybe calling a catering company,” said
John Floyd, vice president of recruitment.
“It’s just about letting the fraternities get
to know the rushees and vice versa.”
Floyd said he thinks joining a frater
nity would be a positive influence on a
student’s life.
“Fraternities have a bad reputation.
The good really outweighs the bad, though.
It will definitely help you out in the
long run if you join a fraternity,” Floyd
said.
Most fraternities will offer bids Jan.
19 and 20 to prospective members, Floyd
said. There isn’t a limit to how many men
fraternities can-offer bids to. However,
spring recruitment tends to be smaller than
fall recruitment.
“During the spring, not as many peo
ple rush. If we had 50 to 60 guys show up,
I think we would be pleased,” Staggs said.
Last fall’s recruitment included more
than 400 students.
There will be an information meeting
at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 in Russell House Room
203 for all interested male students.
Sororities’ spring recruitment will be
handled differently from the fraternities,
according to April Mann, a graduate as
sistant with Greek Life.
“It’s done more as a chapter-by-chap
ter basis. Chapters usually recruit on their
own,” Mann said.
Bookstore

ecampus.com, which has a partnership
with the Russell House Bookstore. Un
like at Addam’s, students can’t pick up
the books they order online at the Russell
House. Books ordered through ecam
pus.com come through the mail. Ecam
pus.com has also started a multimillion
dollar advertising campaign to catch up
with the other online textbook compa
nies.
Bigwords.com has spent hefty amounts
on a new ad campaign doing wacky com
mercials with MTV’s Tom Green.
“I usually use the S.C. bookstore be
cause they are conveniently next to the
law center, and they usuallyhave all the
law books I need But once online book
stores catch on, they will be a good al
ternative to on-campus stores,” said Matt
Lester, a third-year law student.
When comparing online companies’
prices with campus bookstores, there are
some deals on the Internet. When com
paring several books at Addam’s, Russell
House, S.C. Bookstore, ecampus.com,
bigwords.com, efollett.com and varsity
books.com, bigwords.com had the cheap
est books on average. The only drawback
is that on a few of the books, there was as
long as a two-week waiting period. Var
sitybooks.com, which sells only new books,
had some of the highest prices on the In
ternet.
On campus, of the four books The
Gamecock looked for, one was cheapest
at the Russell House and the three oth
ers were cheapest at the S.C. Bookstore.
The S.C. Bookstore prices were only slight
ly cheaper than those at Addam’s.
