Former Bombers manager Stephenson
returns to Capital City for second shot
by Jeff Romig
Sports Editor
f The Capital City Bombers will take
the field this season with new but fa
miliar leadership. The New York Mets
have named John Stephenson, who
managed the Bomfyprs in 1997, as the
Columbia team’s manager for 2000.
His staff includes pitching coach
Doug Simons, coach Donovan Mitchell,
and trainer Brian Chicklo.
Stephenson played as a catcher in
the Major Leagues for the Mets, Cubs,
Giants, and Angels over a period from
1963-1973 (451 games, •.216 lifetime
average). His baseball memories in
clude catching Nolan Ryan’s first three
Major League strikeouts.
r
His coaching career includes 11
years at his alma mater, William Carey
(Miss.), and six years at Southeast
Louisiana, for a total college record of
557-316.
Stephenson now enters his sixth
season as a manager in the Mets orga
nization. Local fans will remember
Stephenson for taking the 1997
Bombers squad into the South Atlantic
League Playoffs.
Doug Simons will keep watch on
the 2000 pitching staff after two sea
sons in that capacity with the Pittsfield
Mets in the New York-Penn League.
The left-handed pitcher spent his play
ing days with a few different organi
zations, but had perhaps his best sea
son in 1991.
That year, Simons spentthe whole
season with the New York Mets, com
piling a 2-3 record with a 5.19 ERA
and one save over 61 innings in his
42 appearances (including one start).
Donovan Mitchell joins the coach
ing staff as no stranger to the South At
lantic League. Mitchell played second
base for the Asheville Tourists in 1993,
when they were an Astros affiliate.
Mitchell (.291 avg.) made the SAL
All-Star Team that season. Last year,
after seven seasons in the Astros oiga
nization, Mitchell tried his hand at
coaching for the first time with the
Gulf Coast League Mets.
Brian Chicklo (pronounced chic
o-lo) bdgins his second year as a train
er in the Mets organization. Chicklo
spent last season with the Pittsfield
Mets.

"My Part-time Job |
at UPS is Really
Working Out."
“UPS is paying nte almost
$10,000 a year to get in tbe best
shape of my life. See, I work part
time loading and unloading
packages, about three to five hours
a day. After sitting in class all day,
it feels good to get some exercise.
It’s like doing a couple of hours in
a gym- except you get paid to work
out.
That’s not the only advantage
of working at UPS. There are other^
benefits-like choosing your own
work schedule and getting paid
holidays and vacations.; No other
company understands students like
UPS. And no other company offers
more. They make it easy to work
your way through school.
If the whole student body
worked at UPS, everybody would
be in better shape-physically and
financially.”
