The Gamecocks continued their success
against Palmetto State rivals this season with a
72-52 victory over Charleston Southern on Tues
day night at Frank McGuire Arena.
Although this was South Carolina’s most de
cisive win of the young season, it could also be
classified as the team’s sloppiest game of the sea
son. In this contest, both teams were plagued by
mistakes and bad decisions.
Following the game, USC coach Eddie Fogler
was puzzled about what he had witnessed.
“I’m confused,” Fogler said. “I don’t know
what I watched.”
What he watched was a game that looked
more like playground ball than a college game.
The two teams combined to commit 49 fouls,
miss 26 free throws and turn the ball over 53
times.
USC started the game with a 12-2 run with
the help of sophomore guard AaronLucas. Lu
cas began by connecting on a 3-pointer to beat
the shot clock, then converted a 3-point play
to give USC a 10-point lead. He finished
with a game-high 15 points, including connect
ing on two of two from beyond the arc.
On the other side of the court, the Caroli
na defense allowed the Buccaneers to convert
only three of their first 22 shots from the field.
At halftime, the home team had a comfort
able 41 -23 lead, the most points the Gamecocks
have scored in a first half in a three-game span.
But, between the layups, dunks and jumpers,
USC was turning the ball over a third of its to
tal possessions.
“We either scored, had a turnover or missed
a free throw,” Fogler said.
When they held on to the ball, the Game
cocks were nearly unstoppable. In the first half,
USC connected on 13-of-20 from the field, in
cluding five-of-nine for three, a 65 percent per
formance.
In the second half, South Carolina came out,
flat. They made only 44 percent of their field
goals and lacked most of the intensity they had1
in the first 20 minutes.
The Gamecocks finished the game with more
turnovers, 27, and fouls, (24, than field goals,
scored, 21. From the free throw line, they con
nected OTi only 21 -of-38 shots, a 55 percent night..
Coming into the game, Fogler was expect
ing his predominantly freshman and sophomore
team to perform flatly.
“I knew [a poor performance] was coming,”
Fogler said.
USC improved to 4-2 with the win, and will
take on the Furman Paladins at 7:30 p.m. Sat
urday at Frank McGuire Arena.
