she said. “It’s a slave mentality when a
parent says, ‘Never ask any questions.’
It’s the workshops that are available where
young people can go to get the tools [to
understand race relations and improve
them], which make them motivated
and animated to evaluate their place in
the world and make a difference.”
Husser said he believes that ending
racism begins with the individual.
“So many people are afraid to cross
that border because of what their friends
will say. Who are your real friends? Who
do you go out with on the weekends?
Brandon [Anderson, student body vice
president, of a different ethnicity from
Husser] and I went out last weekend and
had a great time, but where’s everybody
else once Saturday comes around?” Huss
er said.
“Whether other individuals allow
themselves to overcome my positivity is
up to me,” he said.
Baha’i Club representative and in
ternational studies junior Anisa Newman
said: “Because people expressed their
views, feelings and hearts, it [the Race
Unity Forum] was a success. It showed
that it means something to them [the au
dience and panelists].”
USC Academic Skills Director Jim
Monroe came to the forum out of his own
interest and said he was pleased with the
faculty turnout.
“Three or four of my colleagues are
here tonight, which is a fairly decent rep
resentation of the faculty,” Monroe said.
Newman agreed that the turnout was
greater than expected and that the qual
ity of questions were important and well
thought-out.
“There was an honest exchange of
opinion. As long as people are speaking
honestly, it helps,” Aude Fisher said.
Journalism senior Duke Taylor said
he was pleased with the forum.
“I have a more optimistic outlook
[on die future of race relations],” he said.
“We can make a change, whether as an
individual or a group. We won’t be able
to grow if we don’t,” Taylor said.
Newman said the Baha’i Club will
sponsor another forum next semester on
the equality of women and men, anoth
er principle of the Baha’i faith.

have been great; however, I feel sorry
for them because we haven’t been able
to pull through any wins this year. But
it’s really great that they come out like
this because it makes the guys want to
work harder for them.”
Gunnels said he was happy to be able

team.
“It's always been easy to stand be
hind the winning teams,” Gunnels said.
“Vvfe want the players to know that we’re
going to be here regardless .to take the
spirit a step further and maybe even start
a tradition.”
