Soccer teams see home
action this weekend
Soccer Roundup
The Gamecock
The South Carolina men’s and
women’s soccer teams will have a chance
* to continue their recent successes with
two games this weekend.
The men’s soccer team, coming off a
win against Winthrop on Tuesday, looks
to improve on its 3-1-1 record by par
ticipating in the Providence Kickoff Clas
sic against Air Force tonight.
This is the ninth season that USC has
participated in the Classic, sponsored by
Providence Hospital and Providence Heart
Institute. The Gamecocks have only lost
one match in the Classic since it began.
Last year’s Classic proved to be one
of the most memorable games in USC
soccer history, as the Gamecocks stunned
No. 1 -ranked UCLA in front of a crowd
0 of 5,750 at Stone Stadium.
USC is coming off a 5-0 win against
the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday, record
ing its first shutout of the season. The Fal
cons of Air Force are 3-1.
Last Tuesday’s match saw an offen
sive outburst from the Gamecocks, as
freshman Jukka Sundquist scored three
goals to get his first collegiate hat trick.
Joey Worthen and Alex Balasco helped
out with a goal each.
USC, playing throughout cloudy skies
and windy conditions, managed to com
pletely shut down the hapless Eagles (1
3) with a balanced scoring attack, begin
ning with a Wbrthen goal at the 2:42 mark.
Six minutes later, Balasco headed the ball
into the net off a Worthen cross pass.
0 Sundquist put Carolina up 3-0 at the
i
end of the first half with a seven-yard
strike and an assist from Scott Campagna.
At the 52:48 mark of the second half,
Sundquist took advantage of a Winthrop
mistake to dribble the ball past goalkeeper
Justin Stevens,
Sundquist added a goal at the 69:07
mark, which tied him with Worthen for
the team lead.
The women’s soccer team will face
Virginia Commonwealth at 3 p.m. Sun
day. All scheduled Girl Scout activities
will take place as planned. The team’s
game with Davidson on Wednesday was
postponed because of Hurricane Floyd
and will be played at 7 p.m. Oct. 19.

not enough to do something about it.
That’s the only reason the team
continues to suffer on the field - its
players don't believe in themselves.
I'm issuing a challenge to the team.
Prove to me that you belong in the
world of big-time college football.
Stand up and prove yourselves once
and for all. Everybody involved with
the team deserves a win, but only 85 of
you get to play for it.
Your fans need this one to keep
hope.

Pirates
from page 8
ECU will counter with Jeff Kerr, a
Butkus Award candidate, but his two oth
er mates behind the line won’t compare.
Advantage to USC.
Secondary
Gamecock fens will be rejoicing Sat
urday when comerhack Arturo Freeman
steps onto the field after being out much
of the past two seasons because of two
injuries. Freeman is expected to take out
his aggression on Garrand. USC comer
backs Rashad Faison and Kevin House
did respectably well against Quincy Carter
last week.
The Pirates will feature Forrest Fbs
ter, who has been all over the field in his
last two outings. The All-American broke
up nine passes last week, which is be
lieved to be a school record. Neither
team has a completely healthy or ex
perienced secondary, so it’s difficult to
say who will come out ahead.
Advantage to USC
Special Teams
USC’s Courtney Leavitt is among
the SEC leaders in punting, but his in
ability to put the ball through the up
rights always restricts Carolina’s options.
Steve Florio traveled to Athens last week,
but didn’t play. Williams is a consistent
threat at kick returner.
Thefirates have Kevin Miller, who
was named Conference USA Player of
the Week after making three field goals
and all his EATs against Wfest Virginia.
Advantage to ECU.
