that is making Cub fans (momentarily) forget the infamous
trade of Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.
This kind of deal would make a snake-oil salesman grin.
Ricky will be paid the league minimum with a possi
ble $55 million in bonuses, along with an $8 million sign
ing bonus.
However, to collect his $55 million, all Ricky has to
do is average*about 1,600 yards a season.
How many running backs have ever done that? One -
Terrell Davis, and he hasn’t exactly shown himself as a
longevity player.
The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA (Nothing But
A**holes) championship behind the brilliant play of Tim
Duncan, the boy from St. Croix, and the diminished role
of David Robinson.
Although I hate pro basketball, this series was some
thing to cheer about. Duncan, one of the last true athletes
and players who really represent what athletics is supposed
to be about, proved himself as the star of the future, while
proven veteran Robinson stepped out of the limelight to
help his team win.
Also, the never-say-die New York Knicks made it to
the finals despite devastating injuries to Patrick Ewing and
Larry Johnson, silencing all their critics by beating coach
Larry Bird and the Indiana Pacers. ,
I love to see those underdogs, with unlikely heroes like
Marcus Camby, shock the system.
Our own BJ McKie made the Knicks’ summer
league team and could possibly break into the NBA
next season.
The Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup. Whoopee.
As for USC, football practice got under way with a lot
of hope and promise, but it still remains to be seen what
Sweet Lou and the boys can do with our team.
Senior running back Troy Hambrick was dismissed from
the team, which is likely a blessing. This way, we have
three brilliant backs who can step in and prove themselves
on the SEC battlegrounds.
Phil "The Thrill" Petty is getting back to his full play
ing form after backing up Anthony Wright last year.
Although he lost longtime teammate Taylor Irvin from
the offensive line, Phil should still make an immediate im
pact.
USC opens its volleyball season Sept. 1 against North
Carolina A&T. We have four fantastic freshmen and are
getting votes in the Top 25.
Come on out and join me and my fellow Ballheads as
we carry on a great tradition.
Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering, if clempson hap
pens to report something missing from their various ath
letics fields, I was never there.
