Women’s Golf
The Lady Gamecock golf team finished its
season ranked 17th in the country, making the
NCAA Tournament and hosting the Eastern re
gional.
The team finished seventh in the regional, be
hind champion Geoigia, and managed to make
the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
SEC Coach of the Year Kristi Coggins saw
her team put together a strong performance be
hind sophomore Cecilia Ekelundh and junior Apryl
Arrants, but placed only a respectable 14th. How
ever, Arrants and junior Abby Derman qualified
for the U.S. Amateur Open tournament.
Mai’s T^ns
The 19th-ranked Gamecocks went into the
SEC tournament as underdogs, but turned quite
a few heads by upsetting No. 1 seed Ole Miss and
advancing to the semifinals.
This was the farthest the Gamecocks have
ever advanced in the SEC toumey, but the ride
ended with a loss to Florida. The team, with a
16-11 record, made it to the NCAAs, where it
managed to win two matches before losing to Ken
tucky.
The individual championships were held the
next week, with sophomore Guillaume Legat and
junior Jerome Jourdan each competing. Legat,
matched against Kentucky’s Carlos Drada, was
leading his match but was forced to withdraw be
cause of illness.
Legat finished his stellar season at 33-10. Jour
dan fared a bit better, beating Califomia-Santa
Barbara’s Cory Guy before falling to Illinois’ Oliv
er Freelove. Jourdan finished at 32-12.
WoMBt’sTaMS
The 16th-ranked Lady Gamecocks advanced
to the semifinals of the SEC tournament before
losing to Florida. However, the 16-6 Gamecocks
were awarded a regional and made the most of it,
beating Furman and Wake Forest to advance to
the championships in Gainesville, Fla.
The team lost to Geoigia and was eliminat
ed from the NCAAs.
The individual championships saw freshman
Katarina Maikovski lose to Duke’s Vanessa Webb.
In doubles, Markovski and teammate Celine Reg
nier gave Notre Dame’s Michelle Doss and Jen
nifer Hall a challenge, but couldn’t pull off the
win.
I
Freshman Lynn-Yin Tan was rewarded with
a spot on the All-SEC first team, helping the Game
cocks add another marker to a superior season.
Track am) Fed
The SEC tournament in Georgia saw six Car
olina athletes place at the top of their respective
categories.
Three-time NCAA champion Brad Snyder
won a USC-record eighth straight SEC shot put
title to put the Gamecocks on the scoreboards,
while senior Michelle Fournier won the women’s
hammer throw event.
The Carolina 4 x 100 relay team set school
and track records and easily win their event.
Clint Crenshaw, Terrence Trammell, Shalt
Mays and Jamie Price were the members of the
winning team. Trammell, named Collegiate Ath
lete of the Year by Track and Field News, also
won three individual titles in the 55-meter dash,
the 55-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles.
Trammell set SEC records in both those events
and ran the world’s fastest time this year in the
55-meter.
The biggest story of the SEC tournament was
the USC women’s team, which catapulted itself
to a first-place finish, capturing their first-ever
conference title and only the third in school his
tory.
Behind the pace of junior Ellakisha Williamson,
the Lady Gamecocks pulled ahead of first-place
Florida on the last day of the tourney to win.
Unfortunately for them, the Gamecocks didn’t
fare as well as in the conference tournament,
but once again, super sophomore Trammell
won two events and part of a third.
Trammell placed first in the 60-meter and the
110-meter hurdles and also ran a leg of the cham
pion 4 x 100 relay team.
After the individual championships were com
pleted, Trammell, Snyder and Mikki Barber trav
eled to the World University Games in Spain.
Trammell won gold medals in the 110-meter
hurdles as well as the 4 x 100 relay team, winning
that event with the help of Cal-Polytech’s Kaaron
Cartwright, Auburn’s Coby Miller and Flori
da’s John Capel.
Coach Curtis Frye collected five coaching
awards for his part: Coach of the Year for both
the men’s and women’s regional, National Indoor
Men’s Coach of the Year and the National Indoor
and Outdoor Women’s Coach of the Year.
