Freshman dorms see changes
By Clayton Kale
Hews Editor
Some freshman dorms are under
going changes during the 1999-2000
academic year that are designed to
improve conditions for students in
certain majors.
Bates House and Moore Hall will
have living/leaming communities
with a specific academic focus in
each.
\oore Hall will be a learning com
mur,^y for pre-med majors. Bates
■ Ho'Jie will have a similar learning
L community for students enrolled in
^ktlwollege of Engineering.
'my dents in the Moore
l^^Hleaming community will have
acSB|k> additional academic advis
ing and support services provided by
the Office of Pre-Professional
Advising. Students living in the
Bates community will be in contact
with engineering faculty members
outside the classroom, and they’ll
have additional tutoring opportuni
ties.
Housing Director Gene Luna said
the living/leaming communities have
been brought about by the successes
of past specialty housing programs,
such as the Maxcy freshman honors
dorm and Preston College.
Luna said the success of tutoring
programs in the dorms, such as the
ACT math lab in Bates House, also
has contributed to the support of liv
ing/leaming centers.
“We look to housing to be a com
fortable place to live, as well as a com
fortable place to leam,” Luna said.
According to Luna, the organiza
tion of each living/leaming program
works differently.
The Office of Pre-Professional
Advising has reserved two floors in
Moore Hall. Luna said one floor will
be for male pre-med students and the
other for female pre-med students.
The living/leaming community in
Bates House takes a different
approach.
“[Engineering] Dean [Craig]
Rogers said he didn’t want the engi
neering students segregated from
other students,” Luna said. “He said
he wanted them to leam from stu
dents in liberal arts or other majors.”
Engineering students in Bates
House will be assigned rooms as nor
mal, but will be encouraged to partic
ipate in a listserv, tutoring sessions
and supplemental classes.
“We try to take leads from faculty
and students, as well as our own
expertise, as to how these special pro
grams will work,” Luna said.
Luna said the dorms were chosen
because of their geographical loca
tion.
“Bates is a lot closer to the engi
neering building than the other resi
dence halls,” he said.
Luna said the Department of
Housing is having an open dialogue
with the College of Liberal Arts and
other colleges to discuss other liv
ing/leaming communities.
Luna said incoming freshman
must fill out a special application
before they can live in the
living/1 earning communities.
Other changes that have taken
place over the summer in residence
halls on campus include the addition
of a classroom in Columbia Hall and
renovation of the Wade Hampton
lobby.

No encore
for Bravo,
C-SPAN
By Brad Walters
Editor in Chief
Wrestling fens, take heart - the
USA Network has been added to the
lineup of Gamecock Cablevision for
the fall.
Ron Segroves with University
Housing said the channel was added
after Housing and the Residence
Hall Association looked jointly over
the summer at what channels were
popular and which should be
dropped.
“Students have wanted this
channel for a long time,” Segroves
said. The choice was nearly unani
mous.”
USA features WWF wrestling
and other original programming. It
will appear on Channel 30 effective
today.
According to the 1999-2000 chan
nel lineup, BRAVO and C-SPAN will
no longer be offered. Channel 8,
WHRA, will continue to offer con
