have the possibilities of scoring big
points.
You may not do as well as you
expect, but you have to have the
possibilities and the numbers. Veiy
few times does someone come out
of the woodwork to win the NCAAs,
Frye said.
The 4x100 meter relay will look
for a top five finish and an
improvement on the school record
of 39.01 seconds.
"The women are not hard to
motivate. I am learning a lot about
this young team.
I am learning a lot of thines that
are veiy important to them.
When I reduce the things that
are not related to track, then they
have a hard time dealing with track.
They want to look nice when they
compete and they want to have fun,"
Frye said.
"Growing with them is enjoyable.
They aren't hard-core with a do-ordie
mentality. They are having fun.
They like going to a track meet especially
NCAA's. I like their
approach."
"We're not going in resting on
our laurels. Young athletes teach a

and enjoying this experience at

"Having champions like Dawn
Ellerbe and Lisa Misipeka helped
us. There are lots of sleeping giants,
waiting to wake-up. We have woken
up," Frye said.
"We have some great athletes.
It can't be too big of a surprise to
people because we are an SEC
school. It might be a surprise to
people that we moved up the SEC
ladder so feist, but you have to expect
any SEC school can be a contender
at NCAA's."
"Texas, UCLA, Southern Cal,
Georgia, LSU - they will be battling
for top five," Frye said.
"After the top five it gets scrappy.
We are a top 1U team. It we don t
come back in the top 10, it will be
a disappointment because I know
we are capable of it Better than top
10? It will take some extraordinary
things to do that," continued Fiye.
"We have some plans in the next
few years, but we aren't going to
stress out our athletes at this meet.
We will run Ellakisha in just the
100 meter hurdles, not both hurdles
races. We will ask her to do that
next year, but not this year. It won't
help us win the title. Same with
Mikki Barber.
"She will run in the 400, and
next year she will run in the 200
meter and the 400 meter. You can't
use your athletes like that when
they are young.
"You can't make them feel used.
That isn't good coaching to put that
kind of pressure on than when they
are so young." Frye said.
The S.C. women's team is ranked
No. 10 by TYackwire, while the men
sit at No. 11.
The SEC is widely considered
the top conference in the country
in track and field, and this year is
no exception. Six SEC men's teams,
including five in the top 11, and five
women's teams are ranked in
Trackwire's top 25.
