In its March 22, 1999 issue, US
News & World Report ranked the college
15th nationally for overall excellence
in library science. High national
rankings in the college's school library
media program (No. 3) and health librarianship
program (No. 4) helped
boost the college's overall ranking.
Through distance education, the
college otters residents ot tne state or
Georgia the opportunity to earn the
specialist in library and information
science (SLIS) degree, a post-master's
degree program designed for librarians,
information managers, media specialists
and related professions. USC
is the first university to offer the SLIS
degree via distance education.
The Augusta Baker's Dozen Storytelling
Festival, a celebration of stories,
was first held in April 1987 and
continues in the spring of each year.
The College of Library and Information
Science co-sponsors the program
with Richland County Public Library
and the SC State Library.
COLLEGE OF
EDUCATION
This year, the MAT program in
early childhood education was nominated
by the Association of Teacher
Educators as one of the three best
teacher education programs in the nation.
The association also ranked the
higher education program as 4th
among 30 programs in the Southeast.
The college graduated 682 students,
including 100 doctoral students,
in 1998, more than any other education
college in South Carolina.
The college has 17 schools in its
Professional Development School
network, considered a national model
for professional development and research
of students and faculty. One
school, the Center for Inquiry in Richland
School District Two, had the
highest achievement scores in the district
and the second highest in South
Carolina.
COLLEGE OF SCIENCE
AND MATHEMATICS
The college attracted $21 million
in research funding in 1998, the highest
total among colleges at USC.
The college conducted over 100
research projects for South Carolina

companies in 1998.
The college has produced five of
the 10 most recent winners of the
Amoco Award, given annually to the
most outstanding teacher at USC.
SCHOOL OF LAW
The school's Coleman Karesh
Law Library comprises over 430,000
volumes and is the largest law library
in South Carolina and one of the
largest in the Southeast. The library's
collections encompass American law,
international and comparative law and
the legal history of South Carolina.
The school ranks in the top 20
nationally in the percentage of graduates
passing the bar exam on the first
try and No. 2 in the Southeast, according
to a report by the American
Bar Association.
The school received a $1 million
errant frnm thp law firm nf Nelson.
Mullins, Riley and Scarborough to establish
the Nelson, Mullins, Riley and
Scarborough Center on the Legal
Profession.
THE DARLA MOORE
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
This year, US News & World
Report ranked the school's International
Business Program second nationally.
It was the 10th consecutive
year the publication has ranked the
program either first or second.
In the Oct. 19. 1998 issue of
Business Week magazine, USC was
recognized as having one of the nation's
top graduate business schools.
The survey evaluated USC's Master of
Business Administration (MBA), Master
of International Business Studies
(MIBS) and International Master of
Business Administration programs.
The school's Division of Research
sponsors an annual Fall Economic
Outlook Conference, which
features the latest economic news on
South Carolina, the Southeast and the
nation, with special reports on hot
spots in these areas.

JOURNALISM AND MASS
COMMUNICATIONS
This college remains the only nationally
accredited journalism program
in South Carolina. The college
also has a doctoral degree program.
Four USC students have been
named to the American Advertising
Federation's 25 Most Promising Minority
Advertising Students in the past

The college's senior semester
class allows journalism students to
work full-time at college-sponsored
television, radio or newspaper operations.
Throughout the semester, students
work in all areas of news
production. The class is considered a
model for journalism education

WORK
The master program is ranked
29th in the nation in US News &

The college is a leader in training
and researching ways in which the Internet,
computers and other electronics
can make human services agencies
more efficient, better organized and
more effective.
The college develops and maintain
web sites for national and international
social work education organizations.
This work earned recognition
from the Group for the Advancement
of Doctoral Education recently.

JUSTICE
The college's work in police pursuit
driving and use of force by police
officers leads the nation in finding new
ways to understand, measure and prevent
dangerous vehicle chases and excessive
force by officers.
In conjunction with law enforcement
agencies around South Carolina,
the college offers a program to Russ
lan police officers, training tnem in
American police techniques. The program
also allows students and professors
to learn from Russian police
through an exchange program.
The college's annual Fear of
Crime survey takes a look at South
Carolinians' perception of crime,
those who enforce it and the media
who report on it.
COLLEGE OF APPLIED
PROFESSIONS
The college's sport management
denartment trains students for careers

in the business of sports. Its graduates
run the world of sports from coast to
coast with companies such as the Capital
City Bombers, the Professional
Golf Association, National Football
League and Winston Cup Racing.
Professors in the department of
retailing are helping consumers learn
more about the retail marketplace

outlet shopping centers and Internet
retailing.
Students in the School of Hotel,
Restaurant and Trmrism are able to
learn about managing a restaurant in
the school's Capstone laboratory. Students
work in every aspect of restaurants,
serving lunch twice a week
during the semester.

ENGINEERING AND
INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
The Photonics and Microelectronics
Lab in the Computer and
Electrical Engineering Department
has earned more than $10 million in
research grants to study the use of
wide-band gap materials for computer
and electronics chips.
The Chemical Engineering Department
leads the country in the
study of fuel cell batteries, which can
be used in vehicles and other applications
to cut down on emissions and increase
energy efficiency.
Students in this college benefit
from a full-time writing center that
gives students the opportunity to learn
to express their ideas and thoughtsskills
critical to engineers.

The school is ranked No. 1 in the
nation in the percentage of graduates
going into pediatrics.
Nearly 83% of graduates in the
1999 class are pursuing residencies in
primary care medicine. This school is
recognized as a national leader in the
percentage of graduates in primary
care medicine.

HEALTH
With approximately 1,000 students,
this school is the sixth largest
school of public health in the nation.

PHARMACY
The college's Palmetto Poison
Center answered more than 40,500
calls from South Carolinians last year.
Since 1973, pharmacists from this college
have answered calls about accidental
poisonings and offered valuable
information on poison prevention to
the public and health care professionals.
The college's Drug Information
Service answers calls from health care
professionals and consumers about
prescription and over-the-counter
medications.
The college's Center for Outcomes
Research and Evaluation is one
of the top centers in the nation for research
on the role of pharmacy and
pharmaceuticals in health care.
COLLEGE OF NURSING
The college received the 1998
Outstanding Faculty Practice Award
from the National Association of
Nurse Practitioner Faculties.
The college is home to the only
nursing journal in the world devoted
exclusively to AIDS care.
In April, the college officially
opened the doors to its new Children
and Family Healthcare Center. The
Center offers primary health care to
inner-city children and their families,
as well as children who have been
abused or neglected.
SOUTH CAROLINA
HONORS COLLEGE
Since 1990, USC has had 15
Goldwater Scholars, all of whom have
been students in the Honors College.
The fall of 1999 marks the 30th
anniversary of the Carolina Scholar

valuable scholarship for South Carolina
students. Carolina Scholars are
granted admission to the South Carolina
Honors College.
In an edition earlier this year,
The State newspaper recognized
South Carolina Honors College as "a
jewel in the entire South Carolina education

a small liberal arts college with the resources
of a large university."
