The Gamecock baseball team got a much-needed
boost for its NCAA tournament hopes this weekend,
with a three-game sweep of No. 4 Auburn.
USC improved its record to 27-12 (11-7 in the
SEC), while the Tigers dropped to 33-9 (11-7 SEC).
USC holds a 3 1-2-game lead over Florida for first
place in the SEC East.
USC 5, Auburn 4
USC took the first game of the series thanks to a
strong performance from junior pitcher Randy Hadden,
who garnered his sixth win of the season.
Auburn pitcher Brent Schoening (10-0) took the
mound for the Tigers with an ERA of 2.86 and 94
strikeouts coming in.
USC scored in the first inning on a double steal,
as Nate Janowicz ran home and freshman Trey Dyson
stole second.
The run was negated in the next inning, however,
when shortstop Brian Roberts hobbled a ball,
letting a run score. Auburn's Jamie Kersh drove in
another run before the innine was over.
Auburn kept it going in the fourth inning with
an RBI single from Gabe Gross. A wild pitch by Hadden
allowed Auburn catcher Casey Dunn to score,
but catcher Marcos Rios tagged out another runner
at the plate to stop the onslaught.

USC came up big in the sixth inning, on a tworun
double from Rios. Roberts then sacrificed Rios
to third on a fly ball to right field, missing a home
run by inches.
Auburn put in reliever Brad Weis, who threw a
ball over the catcher's head to score Rios. Dyson
struck out to end the inning, but USC had come back
to tie the score at four.
The seventh inning saw Adam Poe get a leadofl
double and move to third on a sacrifice bunt from
outfielder Tim Angiolini. Sophomore Clint Collins
then lashed a single to short center, scoring the winning
run in his only at-bat of the series.
Scott Barber and Jason Pomar worked the last
two innings to collect the win for Hadden, although
it wasn't easy. Pomar intentionally walked the bases
full in the ninth but struck out the last two to
clinch the victory.
USC 11, Auburn 6
In Saturday's second game of the series, USC
pounced on Auburn starter Hayden Gliemmo for eight
runs in the third and fourth innings and coasted to
an 11-6 victory.
The contest started out much like Friday's Game
1, with Auburn again grabbing an early four runs
before Carolina's bats woke up.
When they did, however, there was nothing Gliemmo
(10-3) could do to stop the attack. In the third,
USC strung together doubles by Marcus McBeth,
Roberts and Janowicz for two runs, and a two-out

single by Angiolini scored another, cutting the Auburn
lead to 4-3.
The fourth stanza would be Gliemmo's last. After
getting Dyson to pop out, the leftie gave up a liner
up the middle to the Gamecocks' Bryon Jeffcoat
and then walked McBeth.
Second baseman Jay Lambert then sacrificed both
runners over, putting Roberts at the plate with two
outs. A single for Roberts plated Jeffcoat, and Janowicz
followed with another double, scoring two and giving
USC its first lead, 6-4.
The Gamecocks weren't done, though. Poe hit a
screamer down the left-field line that was followed
by a seemingly identical shot by Angiolini, bringing
the partisan crowd to its feet and upping the lead
to 8-4.
i Auburn never got closer than three runs the rest
of the way, as USC's Lee Gronkiewicz shut down the
visitors with 2 2-3 innings of scoreless relief.
Gronkiewicz had five strikeouts in his stint.
USC's Peter Bauer (5-1) got the win, going 6 1-3
innings, giving up three runs and striking out five.
USC 2, Auburn 1
Sunday's matchup pitted USC's Kip Bouknight
(5-2) aerainst Auburn soDhomore right-hander Chris
Bootcheck (6-3) in a game marred by questionable
umpiring and surprisingly little offense.
