Happiness or fear, the end of the semester is always a period to remember. It's when the huge stress is being released. How is it released? Let me count the ways... Scientists say the stress can be released effectively in three fashions popular with students: sports, sex and alcohol. "Sports," I believe, in the minds of scientists, must mean doing something associated with athletic activities not sitting in your easy chair with a can S.C Demo Dick Harpootlian is up to it again. Now the chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party has ? angered not ?just state Republicans, but his own national party. With his leadership, the state executive committee endorsed a COREY FORD plan that columnist would place , . Sq^JJ Car. olina's Democratic primary February 26,2000. National party rules forbid any state except New Hampshire or Iowa from having a primary or caucus before March. Despite this, Harpootlian defends the state committee vote by proclaiming he will continue with the date "come hell or high water." Harpootlian has a history of making people mad ? just not those in his party, usually. It began at last year's annual Democratic Party dinner. There, he claimed that the party would kick some Republican (well, you know) in the upcoming November elections. Later, the media got after him when he compared then-Gov. David Beasley to Lucas' rules for art, not money To the Editor: I was Very disturbed when I read your editorial "Episode One makes Fox, Lucas too greedy." Let me tell you one thing: Lucas is a pure artist. He is producing the movie out of his own pocket so that he can present it to the public the way it was meant to be presented. By not going through corporate studios that are only interested in money, Lucas has brought movie-making back to an art form. Lucas is rich enough as it is; his point amecock uURSE ^ SAND* r M licALLV <iN6> C ^ ?UND*.. X_J o imester cs of Bud and grease-soaked, combustible chips, watching the Gamecocks play. I still think all those ways of academic stress reduction have some types of flaws. You should have some time to practice sports. Maybe you don't drink alcohol at all or can't drink it anymore. And satisfactory and fulfilling sex is not something you get like the morning paper or as a prescribed drug. What should you do for the last day of classes? Students at the University of Michigan came up with a different idea. Reuters reports that UM officials are urging students to keep their clothes on next Tuesday night and avoid participating in a nude spring jogging rit ual known as the Naked Mile. As many as 1,000 men and women are expected to disrobe and make the milelong run April 20 while another 10,000 spectators line campus and Ann Arbor streets to watch. University President Lee Bollinger, in a letter to students this week, said he is concerned the annual event could lead to assaults, excessive drinking and nude pictures showing up on the Internet. crat rocks tl \ a derogatory term for a mentally handicapped person. And Harpootlian really angered Republicans this past month, when he called some House members a few choice words because they didn't support Gov. Jim Hodges' First Steps proposal. This time, he has irritated the leadership of the Democratic National Committee. Harpootlian has devised a plan that could actually help build the Democratic Party in South Carolina, however. Undoubtedly, the earlier primary date would increase the state's clout in the presidential selection process. Whichever candidate wins the state will have the momentum for Super Tues-day, when most other Southern states hold their primaries. And, despite the election victories of Hodges and other Democrats in November, the party still is at a disadvantage when compared with the state's Republican Party. The Democrats lost their momentum when Republicans gained a seat in the state Senate in an April special election. The demographics of the state haven't changed, and most voters still remain conserva tive m their beliefs. So this move wouldn't hurt the Democrats. Vice president A1 Gore and Sen. Bill Bradley would visit the state more often due to its importance in the nomination process. Money is not Lucas' objective. As the producer and director and writer of Episode One, everything in the movie is his thoughts. Nothing is put into the movie or even considered before Lucas approves it. The only reason for the regulations on the theaters is to give to the audience the art that Lucas has made in the way it was designed to be seen and heard.
