The'Blue Sky Gallery, opened in 1989, is named R?r
after the artist Blue Sky and is owned and run by his mg
wife, Lynn. All the work on display is by Sky, apart
from one or two pieces that are by his brother-in-law. 816
Sky, born Warren Edward Johnson, changed
his name in 1974. ^ov
"I always feel better on a warm, sunny day. The ^
weather seems to affect my mood a lot. I thought that
if I changed my name to Blue Sky, I would always 5
feel cheerfrd. At least that was the theory," he said, ne
chuckling.
Sky's work can be found all around USC and ^
Columbia. A 7-foot-long, detailed painting of the Horseshoe
is hanging in the Osborne building. Another one, ?es
20 feet long, can be found in the Alumni Visitor Cen- ^
ter on the corner of Pendleton and Assembly streets. maj
The McKissick Museum also houses a large painting,
which is a bird's-eye view of the museum. ^eej
"To paint this picture, I first had to fly over the pro
top of the museum and take a photograph. I did 0f c
this by taking the door off the side of the airplane and peo
flying as low as possible," Sky said.
Born and bred in Columbia, Sky knew he was ere- we (
ative from the age of 5, when he used to dig up his ^ur
own clay to make pots. He graduated from USC in ab0
1964 with a bachelor's deerree in art. He then went
on to get a master's degree in education. strc
