annihilation of the Jews of Europe.
Imagine your home, occupation, education and religion being taken away
from you at once. Throughout Nazi-occupied countries, this is how the process
of annihilation began. Then, imagine moving with thousands of other people
to a "ghetto" where in some cases, like in Warsaw, the average number of people
to one room was 12. Then, figure the 800-calorie-a-day diet and forced labor
for many. Finally, imagine being rounded up, hundreds at a time, into
trains that weren't fit for cattle, let alone people. The total dehumanization
and precise calculations by the Germans created the ideal environment for destruction
of a group of people without much resistance.
In the largest ghetto in Poland, the Warsaw Ghetto, an armed uprising
erupted on the eve of Passover 1943. For 42 days, the Jewish fighters tried to
die with dignity on a field of battle rather than in a silent chamber of gas at
Treblinka. Few survived. Revolts also .occurred at the Treblinka death camp,
Auschwitz and in several other ghettos and camps.
There is no precise number available to describe the total killed. The figure
commonly used is the six million quoted by Adolf Eichmann, a senior SS official.
Most research confirms that the official number of-victims was between
five and six million. *,

Reports of extermination of Jews at Auschwitz reached the Allies in June
1944 from the Slovakian Jewish underground. It was known that the Allies
had command of the skies by that time and that reconnaissance aircraft photographed
people exiting trains onto platforms at Birkenau that would lead
them to their death. The official reason the Allied forces gave to Jewish groups
during the war and immediately after it was that no amount of bombs could
slow the murder operation down, as they would divert forces from decisive
battles and endanger Allied airmen. The only way to rescue the Jews, they
said, was bv "winniner the war."
There are other historical events that are similar to the Holocaust, but in itself,
the Holocaust is unique to history. Mass murder based on religious, ethnic
or social groups has occurred throughout history. The Holocaust can be
considered unique for two main reasons. First, Nazi leadership held that ridding
the world of the Jewish presence would be beneficial to the German people
and all mankind. Second, unlike their policies toward other groups, the
Nazis sought to murder every Jew everywhere, regardless of age, gender, beliefs
or actions, and they invoked a modern government bureaucracy to accomplish
their goal.
Numerous people fell victim to the Nazi regime for political, social or racial
reasons. Germans suffering from mental or physical handicaps were killed under
a euthanasia program. Other Germans were incarcerated for being homosexuals,
criminals or non-conformists to Nazi policy. Policy toward gypsies was
inconsistent. Some were incarcerated in concentration camps, others were allowed
in certain nations to retain a nomadic lifestyle. The people of Poland,
Russia, the Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria were also treated
inconsistently, although they were deemed racially inferior to the Nazis.
