| Wednesday, April 7, 1999 Braves' Co? manager in ?I I started the tv Easter break ei weekend with d( murh hnne nnrf David Cloningjer My favorite tr Heckler's Row team, the At- te lanta Braves, w were finally go- di ing to pick up where they left off, trounc- k< ing all competition in the National League en route to their second world championship to of the decade. n< Also, the Gamecocks' baseball squad Ti had a chance to defend its first-place sta- if tus in the SEC by playing a weekend series se against the Alabama Crimson Elephants, tf Judging from last weekend's games, however, I have only one thing to say ? ye Hell's Bells. fa Not only did USC manage to drop two hi out of three by an onslaught of runs, but to the Braves actually lost their Opening Day hi game, 7-4, to the lowly Phillies. be It was quite a surprising day in the rest lo of the major leagues, as well, as almost all pi the playoff teams from last year lost their ly first games. The Braves started out all right. Last to year's Cy Young Award winner, Tom aj Glavine, mowed down the first three bat- ul ters, and Javy Lopez lashed a two-out dou- si ble to right that scored two runs. The game w also saw the debuts of right fielder Brian H Jordan and second baseman Bret Boone in si their new uniforms. With this sizzling start, I had no si doubt the Braves would not only win this a game, but probably set a major-league record ei by being the first team ever to go 162-0 in th a season. L It was sometime during this moment of obvious mental duress that I realized why pi this could never be. ta You see, the Braves are managed by one aj of the worst managers in the history of base- d] ball, Bobby Cox. It is for this reason, and lo this reason only, that the Braves have experienced some of baseball's worst post- pi season failures since Bill Buckner let that lc fatal ground ball roll through his legs 13 years ago. ta The score was 4-3 Braves in the top of a] the seventh, and Glavine looked OK, but fa there were runners on second and third and n I MESSAY ABEHE_ | JAMES_ fcRIC ADHAMO onniaatiNA JOCELVN ADAMS SHAMIKA ANTONI AIKEN KRISTI LARA ALLARD JUAN LESONYA ALLEN LISA MARCUS ALLEN MELINDA SHERIKA ALLEN CHARAKA ROCHELLE ALMONDS WENDY LOUIS ALSTON MARCHELLE UCHE ANADU PHELICIA ARGENTINI ANDERSON SHAUN MELODY ANDERSON HICUNNI RODNEY ANDERSON RAUL RORY ANDERSON BRIAN TARA ANDERSON KANIKA YENSY ARCHER JABINIA ROSHAN ARMSTRONG TERESA LUIS AROCHA ANITRA ASFAW ASFAW CRYSTAL JONATHAN AVILA LASSANDRA CRYSTAL BAILEY MAR LA NORMA BAKER NATASHA CHUNICHI BAKER PHILLIP TIMOTHY BAKER ROLONDO NAADIA BAKHIT SHARLIE ANTHONY BANKS LAURA KOREY BANKS MARCO MELISA BARBER FAITH CARLA BARENS LUIS LETISHA BARR GENEA TEARA BARR E-MANITA NAKEEAH BARTELLE MARIA EMILE BARTON ANDREW CHARDRA BASS CAROLYN APARECIDO BATISTA JESSIE MELISSA BAUM RANARDA TORREY BECOTE KESHIA SHAREEKA BELL DAWN DEANNA BENJAMIN CELESTINE DISHA BENN MONIKA PAMELA BENNETT DENISSE BENITA BENTON ROSALYN STEPHEN BERRIOS ANITA DYLAN BESS MARY PHYLLIS BETHEA OMARI K L BILLINGSLEY JAKEKA ADRIANA BLACK A. The batter looked to be a healthy lough player, so what did Cox decide to )? While Cox looked like a fat toad suning itself on a log, the hamsters on wheels iside his head decided to intentionally walk le batter, loading the bases for the next itter. (This sounded like a good plan - until I :alized the next batter was a rookie who ad flirted with a .300 average in spring aining and had 50 family members in atindance. I'm sure Cox realized this, too, hich is why he still sat and stared at the igout steps while this rookie nailed a brom-bat, two-run single to center.) Not only did this allow the winning runs i score, it ruined Glavine's day and mine, at to mention that of the 45,000 fans at urner Field. I could have forgiven Bobby he had corrected the error, but then he inds in Mark 'Wild Thing" Wohlers to pitch le ninth. Of course, Wohlers was the story of last sar because of his missing control and the ct that he couldn't find the plate with both ands and a road map. Wohlers seemed i have recovered, getting one out, but then a gave up a run and walked the bases full ifore Cox finally had enough. The Braves st on mental miscues, yes, but what peole fail to realize is that they came from onone person. i ve put up with Cox wheeling my team i rack and ruin for long enough. He manned during the '80s, when Atlanta was reglarly eliminated from the pennant race lortly after Opening Day. If he couldn't in with the likes of Dale Murphy and Bob orner, what makes us think he could posbly win now? The only thing Cox is good for is occaonally getting thrown out of a game beluse he decides to get some physical excise for once instead of talking about te latest canasta game with his good friend eo Mazzone. He never manages his team, instead referring to let it win for him and then ike all the credit. He and general manger John Schuerholz smoke cigars and rink whiskey to rub out the sting of a tough iss and think, "We'll get it next year." We true fans cry at the prospect of sliping back into the mediocre days of 100iss seasons. In conclusion, Bobby, please get off your til and manage this team before it loses 11 focus to win.
