In the first of a four-game set, the Lady Gamecocks fell behind early to the Wildcats, who got out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. Kentucky leaped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Beth Fogle scored on Leslie Kwiatkowski's groundout. Carolina got the run back in the bottom half when Kim Pietro tripled and starting hurler Megan Matthews knocked her in with a single down the left-field line. The Wildcats took the lead for good in the fourth and added two more in the fifth inning for the 4-1 tally. USC's Pietro homered in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score a little more respectable. It was Pietro's fourth roundtripper of the year. In Game 2 Friday, Carolina got off to a quick start, scoring three in the first inning. The Lady Gamecocks got three hits in a row from Joyce McMillin, Kendra McCutcheon and Pietro. Pietro knocked in McMillin with a single to center. Matthews drove in Mc Gutcheon with a fielder s choice, and pitcher Nikki Beers aided her cause when she sacrificed in Pietro. In the third frame, the Wildcats tied the score at 3-3. But Carolina came back in the fourth when McMillin launched her sixth home run of the season, a tworun blast, giving USC a 5-3 lead. Beers went to 7-1 on the season with a fourinning performance in which she gave up just one earned run. Beers has now won her last seven l| decisions.Ih Game 1 Saturday, the Lady Gamecocks edged the Wildcats 3-2 to give coach Joyce Compton her milestone 800th career win.
