and finished with 15 points. Miller anc
LaDarius Halton had 10 points each.
Those shots were part of an 18-6 rur
that closed the half and gave Florida th(
big lead.
South Carolina's best player, BJ McK
ie, had a rough night. Fogler said he hac
no answers for either Florida's 3-poinl
shooting or his own team's descent aftei
two straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
"We are a struggling team," he said
"It's been one tough year. That's OK. It's
not the end of the world."

throw from shallow left-field, as catcher
Adrienne Genovese held onto the ball for
the out.
Nikki Beers started the game on the
mound, holding the Lady Tarheels
scoreless while scattering six hits over 4
1/3 innings. Beers worked out of jams in
the second, third and fourth innings. Beers
stranded six Lady Tarheels on the bases
in those innings.
But it again was Matthews, the freshman
from Greer, who picked up the win
in relief to move to 5-1 on the young season.
Matthews bailed Beers out of another
jam in the fifth by striking out two
to kill the UNC rallv. In 2 2/3 inniners of
work, Matthews struck out five, walked
none and surrendered no hits despite having
already thrown a complete game.
Head Coach Joyce Compton was
pleased with her team's performance
against the Lady Tarheels. "We came out
in the first game and jumped on them early.
It's big when you can score first. We
did a good job defensively when we
needed it.
In the second game, we struggled to
adjust until the fifth. We had some people
come through who hadn't been hitting
the ball well, too. Sondra [Hall] and Megan
[Donohoo] both got big hits. I thought it
was two good wins, especially with the
weather."
