What makes me stand out as
a candidate? It can be f
summed up in a few words: /
experience, motivation, dedication / a
and enthusiasm. The main goal of /
my candidacy is to bring more "stu- I
dent" into Student Government.
1 This comes through more student \ JmA
impact in decisions the senate \
makes. It can be accomplished
through liberal arts town meetings \
before major decisions are made.
One idea that stands out is to set
up a senatorial listserv that students to post on. Hope to
see you Feb. 18.
J. Richards McCrae
As a candidate for the senate, I am primarily concerned
with three matters now before this university.
These are student parking, academic forgiveness
and campus security. The quick resolution of these
matters will prove to be beneficial to the present student
body.
As a representative of the College of Liberal Arts, I will
strive to ensure that the issues that most interest you are
addressed and resolved meaningfully.

I am an Honors freshman majoring in business administration,

I support better parking on campus, restructuring the
advisement process and encouraging joint effort among
campus organizations.
We have 20 people saying they want to do something,
but all we need is one person to actually do it.
Sally Ann Ballentine
If you want an experienced leader for engineering senate,
Sally Ballentine might be the person for the job.
Having been appointed to senate in November, I
have a valuable edge over my opponents. My platform
goals include implementing an "ENGR" parking sticker
I for the gravel lot to ensure that all engineering students
have a place to park. Secondly, I will push for a restaurant
(equivalent to the Sidewalk Cafe at- the Humanities
building) for the engineering building.
Norm Jones
Senate candidate Norm Jones heads into his final week
of campaigning. I am a McNair Scholar and North
Carolina native and bring years of experienced leadership
on a state and national level. I consider diversity a
major issue. I believe when we note this diversity as greatness
rather than an excuse, we become a powerful democracy.
Other issues I plan to address include a parking forgiveness
policy, The Carolina Greeting, the Summit on
Diversity, the USC Service Commission and campus safety.

the students in the College of Criminal Justice the voice

Crime has been the most
popular major campaign
issue.
by Clayton Kale
Assistant News Editor
Crime against USC students and
crime near campus is a major issue in
this year's Student Government elections.
There have been four gun-related
incidents near campus since January.
A shooting at Club Mercedes on Jan.
3 was the first of those. Two students
were robbed the week of Jan. 11 near
Capstone House, and another student
had his car stolen at gunpoint Jan.
22.
More recently, a student was severely
beaten on Greene Street while
walking back to campus.
Student body presidential candidates
have all considered crime prevention
and campus safety as major
platform goals.
"[Campus safety] is my No. 1 issue,"
presidential candidate Malik Husser

Among my accomplishments, I have
authored or co-authored all finance legislation
for the past two years. I have
revised the codes tremendously to protect
worthy organizations from budget
cuts by prioritizing funding based on
the value of programs. But we still need
more money for student organizations!

are receiving the proper amount of money
for their programs. Significant budget
cuts are not the answer. I am proposing
to continue holding Round Tables
for organizations and encouraging coprogramming
between larger and smaller
organizations.
In the past, there has been tension
between you, the constituents, and
the executive members of Student Government.
If I am elected, then you
will expect certain duties from me. An
open door policy will allow each orga
nization to see where their money is going
as well as where they can obtain extra
funds. It also gives you the
opportunity to "check up" on me.

"I also would like to hire more officers
to patrol campus by foot, by bike
and by car," Husser said.
Presidential candidate Sumeet Shah
said he would like to implement a 24hour
escort service with the help of the
Columbia Police Department and the
USC Police Department.
Shah said he also hopes to hire fulltime
security in garages and put in security
cameras there.
Shah said the university should pay
for these safety measures. "I don't think
we should have to raise fees ... the university
should handle it," he said.
Shah said academic forgiveness and
campus safety are his top platform issues.
Student Body Vice President and
presidential candidate Chris Dorsel said
campus safety and academics are the
biggest issues in his race.

Beyond my financial role, I want to
publish student evaluations of professors
on the Web at the end of each semester.
Students should have the opportunity
to research which professors
will best satisfy their learning needs. I
am also working with the administra
tion on renovating the basketball courts
beside Woodrow apartments. I will also
guarantee that Student Government
continue to fund worthy programs such
as the soon-coming Safe Ride.
If experience matters to yQu, please
consider Timothy Clardy for the office

I am the candidate with new ideas
and innovative ways for all students to
benefit from their money. My platform
is capable of facilitating students
through the most efficient way of obtaining
your funds, investing in the Student
Advantage Card, which will enable
you to receive discounts in the
Columbia area, as well as in my efforts
to work with Marriott Dining Services
to reduce meal prices. In short,
these are goals I intend to accomi

candidate you need. I urge you to vote

Dorsel said he hopes to implement
a "safety runway" that will provide a
"safe-lit walkway from the Coliseum to
Capstone."
The runway will be a trail of existing
walkways connected by bright light
ing and heavily patrolled by police,
according to Dorsel. He also said potential
hiding places for muggers will
be removed.
Dorsel said he also plans to add
phones around campus and near call
boxes, "so students who don't want to
walk by themselves can call a friend to
walk with them."
He said he will finish the Safe Ride
program "so students can have a safe,
sober ride back from Five Points."
Dorsel said, that if elected, he hopes
to implement a shuttle system to go
from basketball games.
"We need a safer institution," Shah
said. "Students need to know they are
safe day or night going to class or to the
library.
"If we increase safety on campus,
the amount of crime should decrease."
