It's the end of the world as we know it.

The year 2000 is another of those dates.
Technically, the new millennium doesn't begin
until Jan. 1,2001, but this isn't stopping many people
from contemplating what's to come in less than
a year.
Some religious groups expect the return of Christ.
Others look for the end of the world.
Armageddon, The Rapture, Tribulation, The Apocalypse
and the Second Coming are all names given
to the period commonly known as the end of humanity.
According to some religious beliefs, earthquakes,
rampant volcanic action, fierce winds, tsunamis, sinking
landmasses, famine, plague, world war and nuclear
exchanges will accompany this period of time.
Four million people are expected to make pilgrimages
to Israel in 2000. In response, the government
there is preparing to tighten security to prevent
religious zealots from becoming violent and
attempting to start Armageddon on their own.
Christians, Muslims, Jews, Mormons and other
religious groups believe in an eventual end of the
world and the coming of a savior. They base their beliefs
on hundreds of prophecies in the Hebrew scriptures,
the Old and New Testaments, and other sacred
books.
Although these groups all have different versions
of this savior, one common belief held by each is that
no one knows the day or the hour when such an event

They predict that the malfunction of the world's computers
will trigger a plummeting stock market and
runs on banks because of public fear and chaos.
Such a situation, they believe, will present the
best opportunity to facilitate World War III.
A group in Minnesota made up of computer sci
entists, doctors, teacners ana otner average citizens
foresees such a disaster and is preparing for it
by living on homesteads and stockpiling food and
supplies.
These millennium survivalists are offering safe
havens, which include a cabin and 10 acres in the
plains of Minnesota, for $40,000. For $60,000, you
can buy a cabin and 40 acres.
Other fringe groups believe the Y2K bug is the
perfect excuse to implement martial law and a
global census-and-identification system as a solution
to replace failed governments and economic institutions.
In other words, they believe the computer glitch
will bring about the rise of a new world order.
Some individuals' interpretations of Bible passages,
combined with the world's move to a cashless
society and the more frequent use of identification
numbers, lead them to that same conclusion.
They claim the presence of the number 666, the
biblical mark of the beast, in UPC codes and other
identification codes supports their theory.
Others believe the Y2K bug alone won't spell the
end of the world; instead, UFOs and the millennium
bug combined will set the stage for the biblical Antichrist
and the new world order.
The arrival of an Antichrist has been predicted
several times in the past. Some believe Muslim
Saladin was it. Others thought it would be a Jew.

Even the pope has been suspected of being the
Antichrist.
Some groups believe the pope seeks to rule the
world through a modern Roman Empire from the
Vatican.
According to S. H. Venour in his book "The Counterfeit
Kingdom," while Christians keep their eyes
on a future Antichrist, attention is taken away from
Rome and the pope's evil plot.
These and other predictions can be found in
grocery store tabloids, hundreds of books published
each year and countless Web sites.
Survival guides and other helpful manuals on the
subject are also widely available.
Typically, though, prophecies for specific days do
not come true, and the day comes and goes without
incident.
