USC has six different specialty living environments. There's Preston Residential College, the McBryde Quad for fraternities and South Tower for sororities, and NADA is the international living community. For honors students, there's Maxcy College for freshmen and the Horseshoe for upperclassmen. Starting next year, certain floors of Capstone House will be designated for Honors College sophomores. This trend of specialty housing is nothing new to USC or national colleges in general. According to Director of Student Life Jerry Brewer, one of the main reasons specialty housing was established is so people could stay within their "comfort zones" and then be able to be more successful during their college careers. However, there's some concern that housing can become too specialized. With Black History Month once again upon us, we should take the time to learn about a culture that has actively contributed to the advancement of this nation. Bettering this country requires a hand-in-hand effort, and we should join hands in celebrating all of our histories and values. Beginning next year, Honors College freshmen will be able to live on campus their entire college careers without once having to live with "regular" students. To some, this might seem like a step forward, but to us it's a step back. Intellectual elitism is one of the biggest roadblocks to improved learning for all. If the University of South Carolina truly wants to become one of the best public schools in the country, all its students must perform at a high level.
