The idea behind academic forgiveness is to basically give people another chance at a class, because often times factors beyond their control lead them to get less than stellar grades. It is usually aimed towards freshmen, as an understanding of the transition from high school to college and all the changes that normally occur at that point in a person s me. At large, state-supported schools like USC, the first semester can be tough on freshmen. All of a sudden, they're out of the reach of their parents' influence and have to make a whole new set of choices about life. L Delta Delta Delta is on the forefront of this progress. The sorority has welcomed a black woman into their sisterhood. This is the first time a black woman has become a member of a historically white sorority at the University of South Carolina. Many groups might see this as a great public relations move or a great project. But after talking with some of the members of tri-Delt, it's clear that this is simply not the case. Really, this should be the only situation where students are able to re-take a class. And it should only be one class. When we come to college, we are adults, and we should act like it. This includes responsibility for our classes. The main reason we are here is for academics. If someone can't handle their classes, they should save themselves time and money and drop out of school. Of course, we don't mean to be totally harsh on students. There are numerous examples where people have gotten grades they don't deserve because of bad advisement or problems with a teacher. But the solution to these problems is not letting a student re-take the class. We need to have improved advisement and professors who do a better job of teaching their classes. Certainly an educational institution should be the first to end self-segregation and have all people coexist despite race, religion and ethnicity. Delta Delta Delta has certainly set an example for all student groups to follow. They are helping to blur the lines between racial organizations.
