Sophomore Ashley Albertson goes
bike riding to relieve stress.
Junior Chris Curtis just tries to cope
and then takes a nap or goes out drinking
to shake off any remaining anxiety.
Yet, sometimes it feels like the normal
remedies for stress aren't working
well enough.
Tension headaches and stiff
shoulders can signify it's time to employ
some new techniques to the daily
routine. Yoga, tai chi and massage therapy
provide relaxation and stability
to many people facing stress and anxiety.
Yoga is derived from the Hindu and
Buddhist religions, and there are three
major types of yoga in practice today:
jnana, bhakti and hatha.
Jnana focuses on the attainment of
wisdom and mental clarity. Bhakti is
the spiritual side of yoga, centering
on love and one's relationship with God.
Hatha is the most familiar kind of
yoga to Westerners; it's the more physical
side of yoga. Hatha is about stretching
and releasing tension through various
postures.
Another kind of yoga, gaining popularity
in the West is kundalini yoga.
Kundalini involves opening chakras, or
energy centers, which are believed to
he along the spinal column.
Frances Craig is a yoga teacher from
Toronto, Canada.
"Yoga... is still providing benefits
to those who practice [it]," she said. "Inner
peace, harmony, flexibility and fitness
can be achieved."

Director of Computer Systems/Da
ta Security Bill Mowery said students
are frequently the victims of "spam
ming." Spam is unsolicited commercial
e-mail, or UCE, meaning that it's Internet
junk mail.
First of all, spam clogs up the e-mail
system. Then, the hordes of spam mai
that come through the system here
affect the system's ability to communi
cate with other parts of the Internet
For instance, if America Online users
have been getting spam mail from someone

Mowery said. Those who do get spam
shouldn't send it back because the)
would just be contributing to the problem.
Another thing students should be
aware of is that e-mail is not a private
form of communication. According tc
Mowery, anybody with a simple hacking
program could look through all the
traffic going through the system, and
e-mail isn't encrypted when it travels
"You must be aware that when you
send e-mail, you shouldn't send something
you don't want others to read,'
Mowery said. "Don't send anything you

The YnPfl anH Wellness Center nf
Columbia is located on Devine Street.
Instructors there offer several different
kinds of yoga classes, and the cost
for six-week classes is about $35.
The center also publishes Avenues,
a guide to holistic health in the Midlands.
Avenues contains a listing of most
of the yoga classes around Columbia,
as well as phone numbers of the instructors
or the studios.
USC also offers a yoga class through
the physical education department.
Another source of stress relief is Tai
Chi Chuan, a martial art characterized
by slow, graceful movements. Many
martial arts movies have elderly Chinese
men demonstrating tai chi. Its
roots are in Chinese history, and they're
very complex.
There are five basic styles of tai chi,
and they all provide a good way to learn
flexibility, concentration and peace of
mind.
Some of the styles, like the Lao Jia,
are filled with large movements. Othften

Mowery said he's seen all kinds of

involved students, faculty and staff.

Moweiy advised students against
leaving their computers on if the machines
are hooked up to the mainframe, 1
because hackers can get into students'
computers and look around. I
He also said students shouldn't let
other students download programs onto
their computers, because the other
students could be downloading a
virus or perhaps a hacker program.
According to the Computer Incident
Advisory Capability, people shouldn't '1
send out virus warnings they get without
first checking with an authoritative
source. CIAC said real warnings come
from response teams like CIAC, CERT,
ASSIST and NASIRC, among others.
The CIAC Internet site, gives a fisting
of many current virus warning hoaxes.
*
Moweiy said hoaxes usually end up
being chain letters, because people get
scared and send the letters to warn others.
If students have questions about or
problems with Internet security, they
can send an e-mail to security@sc.edu.
