Before I start this week's reaming,
I do have an injury report to relay
to those who care, because I don't.
My lower level assistant Keith suffered
a mysterious injury on 1-26.
See what happens when you ride
with vermin, especially skanky vermin,
Keith?
Speaking of sports that have never
had anything to do with vermin,
unless you count that Nazi-lover
Marge Schott (and you saw how that
went), the Fall Classic is upon us
once again, and once again those Atlanta
Braves choked up a chance to
play in it.
For the seventh time this decade,
the Braves won their division. For
the seventh time this decade, the
Braves played in the NLCS. For the
third time this decade, thev won
more than 100 games, and what do
they have to show for it?
The answer is one championship
and six disappointments. In each of
those three 100-plus win seasons, the
Braves have failed to reach the Series,
losing to Philadelphia in 1993,
Florida last season and San Diego
Wednesday night, all in six games.
Could this be the end for the
Braves and those god-awful "fans"?
Where were they in 1990? Except for
my friend and fellow writer Dave
Cloninger, who has been a Braves
fan from birth, most of them, including
my own mother, have been fans
since 1991, but then again, my mother
is vermin and what do they know
about baseball anvwav?
The sad truth is, and most Braves
fans haven't figured this out yet, no
matter how many games a team wins
in its first 162, if you don't win the
next 11, your season is wasted.
Then again, this is the South, and
everything, including common sense,
comes slowly. Maybe my friend Pete,
who is a die-hard Yankees fan from
New York, understands what I'm
ranting about. Anything less than a
world title is the Atlanta Braves and
thaf s totally unacceptable.
So while Bobby Cox is out beating
his wife, two real teams will face
each other in the World Series. Tony
Gwynn of the Padres will get his second
opportunity to win his first ring,
while David Wells of the Yankees
will try for his fourth. Wells will face
Georgia Tech alumnus Kevin Brown
in a dream Series opener Saturday
night at the "House That Ruth
Built."
What's my take on the Series? It
would be easy for me to say the Yan- ^
kees will win in three and Game 4
will be "if necessary," but I won't.
This Padre team, with their tenacity
and ability to beat the odds, has i
made a living out of making sportswriters
look ridiculous. They have al- .
ready beaten two teams that have
won 100-plus ballgames.
Four more wins over another, and 8
they're world champions.

Greenville, S.C.?In their final road
game of the regular season, the South
Carolina women's soccer team defeated
Furman 4-3 Tuesday night to raise
their record to 8-4-1.
The victory snapped Furman's eight
game winning streak, dropping their
record to 10-4.
Head coach Sue Kelly said of Furman,
"They're absolutely twice the
team they've been in the past. [Furman's
coach Brian Lee] has done an
outstanding job."
Perhaps the most telling statistic
was that all seven goals came in the
first half, including three in the final
three minutes of the half.
