What a difference a week makes. Last weekend,
the USC women's soccer team suffered two
consecutive losses on a road trip which left the
team emotionally drained and looking for answers.
How has the team responded since then? In
their last two games, the Lady Gamecocks have
overwhelmed their opponents, outscoring them
11-2. And after Sunday's convincing 6-1 triumph
over UNC Asheville, thanks to a trio of freshmen
and two playmaking veterans, the team looks
ready to put aside past demons and get on with
the rest of the season.
USC wasted no time Sunday, scoring just two
minutes into the match. Freshman Morgan Mclntyre
broke free and blasted a shot into the right
corner of the goal past UNC Asheville's diving
goalie, Christine Geske. "Mandy [Pavlovits] won
a header, I got to the ball and heard everyone
yell 'Shoot it! Shoot it!' so I did," Mclntyre said.
Six minutes later, the team's leading scorer,
Jennie Ondo, dribbled around three Lady
Bulldog defenders and poked a shot past the
keeper to make the score 2-0. The Lady Gamecocks
dominated the majority of the first half,
attacking relentlessly and keeping UNC Asheville
on their heels. After the team barely missed a
few shots on goal, junior Mandy Pavlovits took
a pass from Mindy Sanders in the box and scored
to make it 3-0 with six minutes to go in the half.
It looked as if USC would have a shutout going
into halftime. However, with 48 seconds left,
the Lady Bulldogs' McKenzie Miller intercepted
a lazy pass, in the box and lifted the ball right
over the head of Carolina goalie Carrie Warner,
making the score 3-1 going into the lockerroom.
"I was very pleased. We came out very strong
and started well. Our setbacks were short-lived,"
commented USC coach Sue Kelly. "We came out
in the second half and were very composed."
The Lady Gamecocks did exactly that.
Controlling the rest of the game, Carolina played
smart and waited for their chances, finally getting
one with 21:20 left. Freshman Melinda Carter,
from Piano, Texas, wrestled away the corner kick
from a Lady Bulldog defender and drilled a shot

i- We're all about aggressiveness; we're just trying
to take things one step at a time," she said,

dy Gamecocks a spot in the SEC tournament,
something they missed out on last year. But

team; that includes coming off the bench and in

Five of the last six regular season games are

WCW NITRO invaded Columbia Mon- (
day night, and many of the 11,000 fans in j
attendance left the arena with a sense of j
what could have been. While it may have j
played out better on television, Carolina j
Coliseum emptied to a chorus of boos Monday
night following the final match.
What could have been a terrific main \
event between Sting and Bret The Hitman"
Hart for the U.S. heavyweight title quick- 1
ly fizzled into another NITRO bust. In yet
another instance, the main event had no
winner.
This time the two men merely fought
backstage to close the show, leaving fans in
the arena to watch the action on the big
screen. Hart and Sting put on a tremendous
brawl, but those who paid for seats got just
what those at home did.
What could have been a great brawl between
Kevin Nash and Scott Hall wound
up taking place at a local bar and not at the
Coliseum. So, fans at the arena did not
see the Wolfpac in the ring. Early in the
show, the Wolfpac attacked nWo Hollywood,
but all of this action occurred in the lockerrooms.
The Wolfpac did go to the extreme
by busting up a nWo Hollywood limousine.
This event featured Sting picking up the
limo with a forklift and dumping it on its
side.
What was almost a great match between
Diamond Dallas Page and Kanyon, which
actually took place in the ring, faded into a
disqualification. The two went to the limit,
featuring new and innovative maneuvers.
However, no decision was rendered as Raven
interfered in the end. "What about me?"
Raven said over the microphone. Many fans
in the crowd then said, "What about us?"
WCW used World Champion Goldberg
twice Monday. His first appearance, a match
with Disco Inferno, was at 7:15, before half
of the crowd got there. His second and final
appearance was his predictable run-in to
save DDP from Raven and Kanyon.

As is usually the case, leave it to the
Four Horsemen to be the only bright spot
)f the night. While Eric Bischoff begged
Flair to come to the ring, he got the 10-year)ld
Reid, instead. Reid and Arn Anderson
proceeded to humiliate Bischoff on his show,
featuring a Reid takedown of the boss. Ric
Flair trotted to ringside with "2001" blarng
to confront Bischoff, but that never took
place as the nWo fled the ring with the
ippearance of the other Horsemen. The
'family reunion" of sorts by the Horsemen
vas indeed one of their classic moments.
The "family night" theme started earlier
in the show when Buff Bagwell was con
ironted by his angry mother. Judy Bagwell
jave Buff a severe tongue-lashing for his
recent antics, including his faked injuries.
She then slapped Buff and dragged him all
;he way to the lockerroom by the ear.
As for Hulk Hogan and The Warrior,
Hogan did come out for an interview, but
rhe Warrior never showed his face in the
irena. He merely ran personal speeches on
ihe television. While this Nitro might have
seen a bit disappointing, expect WCW to
rome through in the next two weeks, as they
mist set up the Halloween Havoc Pay-Perftew.
At the rate they're going right now,
10 one would buy it.
