Everyone dreams. We can all relate
to childhood nightmares, anxiety dreams
and fantasies that fulfill our deepest
desires.
But is there a purpose to dreaming?
And if so, what does it mean?
The answer is more complex than
the average person might imagine.
Dream interpretation has long been
a controversial topic for psychologists.
Sigmund Freud believed that
dreams merely keep the body from
awakening itself for other activities.
For instance, the midnight munchies
won't stir people from slumber if they're
on a dream date with Leonardo DiCaprio
or Pamela Anderson Lee.
Freud's dream theories were disproved
when scientists found that peo
pie have five or six dreams on any
given night, not just when their bodies
crave something. ^
The next major dream theory came
from Carl Jung, who thought that
dreams compensate for a neglected part
of our personalities.

The problem with Jung's research
was its tendency to show a consisten
cy between his subjects' dreams anc
their conscious behavior, rather thai
the gap he expected.
That means people who drean
they're killing someone are probablj
pretty aggressive when they're awake
After Jung, the researchers have di
vided themselves on the issue of dream*
and dream interpretation. Some believ<
dreams can inform, whereas others
think people read their own meanings
into dreams.
A scientist is unable to prove wha1
happens when people are dreaming
primarily because they can't talk whil<
they're asleep.
Instead, researchers have to rely 01
the dreamers' memories of events tha
happened while the dreamers were un
conscious, which doesn't make for mucl
sound scientific research.

Alex Lukeman, author of "What
Your Dreams Can Teach You," is convinced
that dreams are filled with meaning.
He sees them as necessary to understanding
personal identity.
He lists three important things to
keep in mind when looking for the meaning
of dreams:
Everything is related to you and
your life
Symbols are specific to you, although
sometimes a more universal
meaning is present. You must determine
your personal language of symbols.
Ask yourself quietly for information
about, or the meaning of, your
dream. Something in you created it and
knows what it means.
Michael Sheridan, head of Ireland's
Aisling Dream Interpretation center,
thinks individuals dream to heal imbalance,
find direction and discover reasons
for their actions.

to people seeking an understanding of
their dreams. These rules, which also
stress the dreamer as the focus, center
on issues like personal responsibility,
cause and effect of actions, and avoidance.
Junior Jon Culp sees dreams as "not
important really. (They) just kind of recap
everything that's going on in your
life."
Graduate student Casey Kaufman
agrees.
He thinks that dreams are the way
people's minds work through the problems
they have in the daytime.
Those who want to look more into
what their dreams mean should try
starting a dream journal, dream analysts
say.
The analysts suggest keeping a notebook
by the bed and writing whatever
you remember about the dream right
after waking up.
