The Ga University plans for parents' welcome staff writer JIM CROWLEY This weekend, more than 800 parents are coming from around the country to see their children in what is expected to be an exciting and activity-filled weekend. Student Life Director Patricia Tomanio is responsible lor organizing the weekend. "Seven hundred people are registered, but I'm expecting that 1,200 or so will show up," Tomanio said. There will be a gathering at USC President John Palms' house, located on the Horseshoe, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday to kick off the weekend. There will be student entertainment, among other things. From 8 to 11 p.m. Friday, the Russell House Ballroom will be transformed into a beach for the Welcome Beach Party. Food and refreshments will be served under the the cardboard palm trees. Woody Windham will be the disc jockey for the evening. "Woody is wonderful," Tomanio said. "They all really have a blast with him." Saturday begins with a parent/student open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Blatt P. E. Center. Parents will have the opportunity to use the facilities. There will also be a tennis tournament. Parents can enjoy tailgating from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at USC's football practice field next to the sta dium. Then, of course, there's USC's game against Marshall. With the exception of the South Carolina Honors College picnic at the Horseshoe, Sunday will be open to whatever students choose to do with their parents. The USC Bookstore will be open for parents to use their 20 percent discount on Gamecock apparel. Parents are also encouraged to tour the city, visit Finlay Park or the Riverbanks Zoo, or just spend a quiet afternoon touring the campus. For many freshmen, Parents Weekend is the first chance for them to show their parents around campus. "I'm extremely excited that my mother has the opportunity to see where I have been living for the past month," freshman Stephanie Moore said.
