Don't accuse Ashley Edlund of having a bad
memory. She remembers what happened on
Sept. 23,1997 in Jervey Gym. She remembers
the five-hour trip to and from the gym. She rempmhprs

definitely remembers how the fans of the Tigers
were loud and boisterous.
Tonight is the night she has been waiting
for since that dreadful night in 1997.
"Since I'm not from South Carolina, the first
two years I thought of it as just another match,"
said Edlund, a native of Portage, Mich. "But
last year, I realized what a big rivalry it was.

We walked into a packed gym, and they had
their 'State Champs' shirts already made.
And since that night, all we've been thinking
about is revenge on Clemson. We want to get
them back real bad and we've been waiting for
this match for a year."
The Gamecock volleyball team will get a
chance at redemption at 7 p.m. tonight when it
hosts the Clemson Tigers in a nonconference
matchup.
"Revenge is something we've been looking
for since September 23," senior Cindy Robarge
said. "Every day this summer, whether
in the weight room or running sprints and
stadiums in 100-degree heat, we were thinking
of Clemson."

The Gamecocks come into tonight's matchup
with a 6-1 record while the Tigers enter with
a 5-1 mark.
Last weekend, Carolina went 2-1 at the adidas/Sooner
Invitational, defeating host Oklahoma
twice and falling to No. 10 Pacific. Clemson
won the Big Orange Bash, defeating Auburn
and Central Florida.
This year, the Gamecocks are once again led
by the duo of Edlund and junior Crystal Moore.
The pair garnered All-SEC honors last season.
But a big part of the Gamecocks' success has
been due in part to freshman Cally Plummer.
The right-side hitter from Cheboygan, Mich.,
has been named to both All-Tournament teams
she's played in and is at the top of Carolina's
kills fist.
While those three players will be important,
the key to Carolina winning tonight will be
for middle blockers Danika Taylor and Robarge
to counteract the powerful Clemson middle duo
of Cindy Stern and Stephanie Schulz.
rayior, a transier irom iNew Mexico state,
has been solid in the middle while Robarge, a
1996 All-SEC selection, has made a nice transition
from right side to the middle.
She is back to 100 percent after total reconstructive
surgery on her right ankle in 1997.
Both Taylor and Robarge have been key early
and must play well tonight if USC is to move
to 7-1. - '
In last year's 11-15, 8-15, 2-15 debacle at
Clemson, Stern absolutely owned the Gamecocks.
She had 16 kills and four block assists
while posting a .346 hitting percentage. This
year, both she and Schulz are off to a fast start.
In six matches, the 6-foot-3-inch Stern has 85
kills, 35 total blocks and a .421 hitting percentage.
Schulz has 53 kills, 30 total blocks and a su
perb .495 hitting percentage. If the Gamecocks
are to win, Robarge and Taylor must stop, or at
least slow down, these two.

middle position and Stern's been playing there
a long time, she'll obviously have the upper
