The USC women's soccer team defeated UNC Greensboro Satin-day 4-2. This match was the preseason's final scrimmage, and a win was just what the Gamecocks needed to get the regular season off to a good start. The game was scoreless until junior Angela Austin scored the first goal on a penalty kick with 13:34 left in the first half. Junior Jennie Ondo was fouled inside the box to set up the penalty kick. UNCG's Ali Lord scored early in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Carolina then scored two goals within 12 minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Freshmen Lydia Bienias and Melinda Carter scored the goals, respectively. Lord scored again for the visitors with 15:49 left in the second half. Morgan Mclntyre scored the game's final goal to give the Lady Gamecocks the 4-2 win over UNCG. "It's a big change, but it's the position I played in high school, and I was actually recruited to play the middle," said Robarge, a Columbia native. Also look for sophomore Mandy Quarterman to be a big producer at the outside hitter position. Last year, Carolina went 21-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The men's soccer team will open Tuesday as well, hosting Coker College at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium at the Graveyard. The stadium is located between Bates West and The Roost. This year's squad will be young, but it has shown a lot of potential in the preseason. One player no longer with the team is Josh Wolff, who departed a year early to play with Major League Soccer. "When I think Josh could be playing for us this week, I wish he was still here," USC coach Mark Berson said. But don't look for Carolina, who went 16-3-1 last year, to be down. The team is stocked with talented players eager to return to the NCAA Tournament, where it advanced to the second round in 1997. Senior John Harr (31 points on 13 goals and five assists), midfielder Ryan O'Neill (21 points on six goals and nine assists), defenders Chris Lockwood and Chris Morman and goalkeeper Henry Ring (6.5 shutouts, one goal allowed per game) will be the headliners for the Gamecocks. Also look for sophomore Kim Eriksen, senior Nathan Watkins and freshman Joey Worthen to be big producers in 1998.
