Stephen Kelly, president of the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, admits the name of the
organization is somewhat misleading.
"The title is really a misnomer," said Kelly,
a senior history major.
USC's chapter of the FCA, a national organization,
is open to all students; in fact, the majority
of those who participate aren't athletes.
^Ne may get 50 athletes a week. It's usually
normal college students," Kelly said.
The weekly meetings are held at 9:13 p.m.
Wednesdays in the Nursing Auditorium.
The time is purposefully unusual, something
easy to remember.
At the meetings, students can participate
in the singing of contemporary Christian music
or the performing of skits.
Each week, there's a different speaker, usually
a person involved somehow with athletics.
Food and drinks are also served.
"It's very upbeat," Kelly said. "Everyone's
singing and clapping their hands. It's like the

This week, the guest speaker will be Assistant
Basketball Coach Barclay Radebaugh, who
also serves as adviser to the FCA.
"I think it's a quality organization that has
a positive impact on USC and on our student
body, both athletes and non-athletes," Radebaugh
said.
"It gives them a mid-week worship opportunity,
and it's a chance to fellowship."
So what, exactly, is the purpose of FCA?
"The main thing we want to do is reach people
for Jesus Christ on our campus," Kelly said.
One way the organization does this is through
its leaders, a total of 30 for this year.
Aside from Kelly, there are three vice
presidents and several committee chairpersons
and committee members.
The committees include community service,
publicity and outreach.
The community service committee began
the year by helping freshmen move into residence
halls on move-in day.
Other plans for the year include holding
recreational activities for youngsters at the Epwnr+Vi

Bible-study leaders address students' spiritual
sides by holding separate male and female
Bible-study classes.
Also, campus participants lead FCA meetings
for local high schools.
The organization takes part in Homecoming
festivities, but its biggest project is held during
spring break.
Each year, FCA members take a mission
trip to a city, where they serve the community
and conduct vacation Bible school at children's
day camps.
The site last year was Charleston, and the
year before that, some went to Atlanta, Ga.
"It's going to be a tremendous year," Radebaugh
said. "We have a lot of fun activities
planned."
Tiffany Gosnell has been a member of the
FCA since she was a sophomore in high school.
Now, as a college senior, she holds a leadership
position as one of the organization's vice
presidents.
"It keeps you focused on what your purpose
is for being on this earth, and that is to share
the joy of your relationship with Christ with
others," Gosnell said.
She said it's a time to come together with
friends, worship with each other and encourage
each other.
Social activities are usually planned during
the week.
For example, students are invited to play
Capture the Flag at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the
Maxcy Gregg Park.
Aside irom tne otner activities planned tor
this year, Kelly said he'd like to see a revival on
campus of "people thinking about godly things
and challenging God."
During his freshman year, Kelly remembers
there being about 70 FCA participants, and
while the FCA boasts an average of 300 members
each week, he would like to see the numbers
continue to grow.
"I hope people are not threatened by the athletic
or Christian stigma," he said.
"The truth is there, and I just hope people
come and check it out."
