The debut of Summer Sounds, a music fes
tival held at Marshall Park in Charlotte, N.C.,
was an exciting event. The two-day outdoor festival
featured more than 80 national and
regional music acts, six stages, an artist market,
vendors, food and kids events.
Some of the popular artists who perfromed
over the weekend were Stevie Nicks, Isaac
Hayes, Morris Day and the Time, Clint Black,
Don McLean, Live and Squirrel Nut Zippers.
June 21, the second day of Summer Sounds,
was filled with highlights beginning at 10 a.m.
and ending after a passionate performance
from Stevie Nicks at 11:30 p.m. Nicks was
scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m., but opted to

didn't want to play when other bands were performing
on other stages.
As she began her set, the crowd grew larger
to watch her sing songs featured on her new
three-CD set, Enchanted. She opened with
"Outside the Rain," a song from her most popular
album, Bella Donna. Nicks also performed
the hit songs she wrote as a member of
Fleetwood Mac, "Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman,"
"Rhiannon" and "Landslide." Nicks' live interpretations
of these songs sounded just as good
as they did during Fleetwood Mac's popularity ,
in the 70s.
Nicks' stage presence was magical. She
changed outfits many times, but kept her same
trademark boots on during the whole nerfor
mance. The crowd was amazed by her energy, (
rocking her way through throbbing songs such

they do on the CD.
During "You Came A Knockin'," the scattered
crowd around the stage was dancing and enjoying
the performance. The sound was good, but
muffled by Wade Hayes on the country and
western stage, which was close by. Despite the
conflicting music, Howie put on a thrilling set,
ending with "Sitting on a Big Front Porch." It

Morris Day and the Time
were also crowd pleasers. They performed all of
their hits, including The Walk," "777-9311" and
"Jungle Love." The songs that made Day a hit
in "Purple Rain" made everyong dance. Even
the crowd waiting for Stevie Nicks was heard
singing along with Day.
A diverse and powerful musical lineup,
friendly staff and good food made Charlotte's
Summer Sounds a satisfying experience. Even
