Crawley, a native of Australia,
earned his bachelor's and master's degrees
in physics from Melbourne University
and his doctorate from Princeton.
In 1965, he became a research
associate at Michigan State. He has
also held visiting positions at many
universities around the globe, including
Melbourne University, the Australian
National University and the
University of Paris.
