COCOON CRASH K's Choice
(out of five stars)
After K's Choice played at the Elbow Room
last September, they announced that they
would break from touring for a while to record
their third album. Eight months later they
were back in the Elbow Room, with their new
album to test on a live audience. Five weeks
later, Cocoon Crash arrived in stores nationwide,
and a new single, "Everything for Free," is
getting lots of airplay.
Since Ks Choice is from Belgium, people

WARQ 93.5 was one of the first stations in the
country to give them air play.
Most people who listen to the radio are
familiar with their hit single "Not An Addict,"
from their 1995 album "Paradise in Me." Just
before their last show, they were interviewed on
WARQ and got to play 2 new songs.
Another reason for their presence in
Columbia is the warm reception they get from
the audience. Everv time thev Dlav at the

Elbow Room, it is packed with people who can
sing along to all of their songs.
They even claimed Columbia as their
home away from home. They have also toured
with the Indigo Girls, and many Columbians
might have been introduced to K*s Choice when
they opened for Alanis Morissette at the
Carolina Coliseum in 1996.
As with their previous two albums, Cocoon
Crash contains a variety of songs diverse in

tempo as well as instrumentation. The jangle
of their guitars dominate their up-tempo
songs while beautiful string contributions
enhance their softer pieces. Brother and sister
Sarah and Gert Bettens write most of
the songs, and their vocals define the songs
and lift their music to a higher plane.
Sarah's lead vocals are powerful and
clearly enunciated, while her scratchy Amy
Ray-like voice gives each song a unique
quality. Gert's harmony provides that perfect
Simon and Garfunkel-like touch. Sarah
Bettens would sound wonderful just reading
a phonebook.
The new album touches on several
themes, but the primary one is, arguably,
the struggle to make the transition from
being isolated and alone, attempting to
ignore and escape our problems to getting
out in the world, facing our problems and
growing up.
Just count how many times the singer
mentions her "room." Eventually we must
open the door and participate in the real
world even though our rooms are safe and
comfortable.
The singer cautions in the title track,
"Hold on tight, here's your cocoon crash...."
Our "cocoons" will be destroyed soon
enough, and we will no longer be able to h
from our most pressing issues.
This CD is worth having for the quality
