Staying on the diamond, the
women's softball team, which was ravaged
by injuries and suspensions as
the 1998 season wore on, was struggling
for a breath of life as school ended
in early May. They went down to
Columbus, Ga., on May 8-10 and made
a valiant effort with only 11 players on
the roster.
They won their first game of the
tournament 2-0 on a seventh inning

Troesh. They didn't fare as well the
rest of the tournament as they wore
down from the lack of substitutes
and eventually were eliminated by
Florida and Mississippi State.

The fun is not over for USC fans.
The men's and women's track teams
are headed up to Buffalo, N.Y., for the
NCAA Outdoor Championships and
also the USATF Championships in
New Orleans, La.
But don't fear when all of that is
over. By then it will be time for another
summer of hype as the hope that
springs eternal for our football team
once again moves into high gear. Fall
practice starts in early August and lots
of fresh, new faces will be competing
for starting sports. Can Brad's boys
make 1998 their breakthrough year?

Freshmen Kip Bouknight and *
Peter Bauer were named to the
1998 Louisville Slugger Freshman
All-America Baseball Team.
Bouknight broke the South
Carolina record for victories by
a freshman when he went 11-3 in
leading the Gamecocks to the
NCAA Regional tournament.
Bauer, a 6-foot-8-inch native
ot silver Spring, Md., went /-u in ^
mostly non-conference appearances.
The All-America team was selected
by the staff of Collegiate
Baseball newspaper.
