?) University of South Carolina WUSC enligh Marcus Amaker Journalism senior On the far left of the radio dial lies USC's student-run radio station, WUSC 90.5 FM. Columbia's only college radio station is located on the third floor of the Russell House, where students broadcast shows featuring lesser-known bands and diverse types of music. Recent USC graduate Drew Harton served as manager of the station for the 1997nn 1 1 T\ MTTTO/^ yo scnooi year, L/uring mat ume, vv usl continued to bring unique shows and music to the listening audience. "I think WUSC provides a great source of musical diversity, not only for the USC community, but for Columbia in general," Harton said. During the school year, every WUSC show is two hours. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., student disc jockeys host free-format shows, in which every style of music is required to be played. Beginning at 6 p.m. the specialty shows start. These shows feature one genre of music and are hosted by DJs who are knowledgeable about each genre. All shows adhere to WUSC's non-top 40 music policy. WUSC's specialty shows include rap, jazz, blues, punk, country and electronic music. Ope specialty show, "Massive Metal," is devoted to metal music. "Our show tends not to narrow its focus as far as subgenres are concerned. "Columbia's metal scene needs to be rec ognized, and the show does a good job of reaching out to metal heads of all ages." WUSC has several executive positions open for disc jockeys who want to take on more responsibility. Except for the station manager, each position is voted on by DJs who attend station meetings regularly. USC student Robert Regal is WUSC's new station manager for the summer and next two semes"There's a lot more responsibility to be- |? ? ing manager than I thought, but I think I can handle it," Regal said. Regal said he wants to improve several aspects of the station while he is station manager. WUSC's training process and music rotation arp two thinac hp wants to work on "In training, we'll make a video and we'll make an audio tape of things that sound good and bad," he said. "I also want to improve the morning shows and try to be a lot more responsible with ticket giveaways." WUSC gives away free tickets for various clubs in Columbia. Last semester, the station became the official radio station of the Elbow M Room Music Hall.
