University of South Carolina USC only cli Sarah Garibaldi Journalism senior As a senior in high school, I remembered coming to USC for South Carolina Scholastic Press Association conferences. I had moved to South Carolina recendy, and I was unsure of what the state had to offer in higher education. I got pamphlets from several other schools, but j : j i i. .1 t i n l: ueuueu 1101 iu iuuk iniu uiciu auer l visueu ^.aiumia. The first thing that attracted me to USC was its campus. I fell in love with the Horseshoe and its historic buildings and its lush green lawn. I could see myself lying there in the sunshine on a warm day. I also liked what I saw of Columbia. I knew I wanted to go to a big school where I could have lots of opportunities to get involved with different things. And I knew USC had a good journalism program, which is what I wanted to major in. USC ended up being the only school I applied to. I just knew it was where I wanted to go. When I got here at the beginning of my freshman year, I was a little more than nervous. I had to wait a couple of days for my roommate to arrive, increasing my fears. But once she got there, we hit it off so well. We spend the whole year hanging out with each other, and we still keep in touch. I wanted to make lots of friends at USC, and I thought the best way to do that was through student organizations. During summer orientation, I had filled out the student organization survey, and I began to get information from organizations on campus. In the early fall, I became a copy editor for the Garnet & Black magazine. I also joined other journalism organizations like the scholastic press association. I worked hard for the magazine throughout my freshman year and learned a lot about journalism from older staff members. Because of my hard work my freshman and sophomore years I became editor of the 1997-1998 Garnet & Black. I'm glad I chose USC. Some of the best friends I've ever had I met here, and I'm going to miss it when I graduate. IftlE? BYYOURFUT IKING A GADPFD rHAIf ER CENTEI IT THINGS UNA Transfer students 1 Rosalind Harvey i Journalism senior , I transferred to USC, and it was the best decision I could have ever made! ^ 1 Well, sure I am breaking my father's j heart, with him being a Clemson graduate '> and all, but I think that Carolina is finally ? growing on him. However, I think that it '< will be a cold day in July before he will put ' the "I'm a USC dad" bumper sticker on his car. I I was really worried about transfer- I ring to another school. Besides the typical t fear of becoming a number, I was afraid 1 that I would be a year behind. Not only in my academic schedule, but also with the 1 campus. ? I know it sounds weird, but I was t honesdy afraid that I would not fit in and 1 USC would be full of "cliques" already established. Plus I was afraid that I could not t really become involved in student activi- f ties. Boy was I wrong! 1 The night before my first day of classes, I checked and double checked all of my t classes for the day and the buildings they a were in. I even starred them on my map of t USC so I knew where I was going. Coming from a small school, I was afraid that I i was going to get lost on campus. s I really don't know why I was so ner- 1 vous. Everything went very smoothly and s URE? A :e: l On Sigi+ C( Co-op Ed Page 19 fit right in at USC my professors seemed nice. I met several really nice people, and I did not get lost! By the^end of my first semester I had fallen in love with USC. The football shames, the people I met, my new friends, md yes, the classes as well. My fears of beaming a number on such a huge campus ind my fear of not fitting in were put to est. k 11 r r i i All or my professors Knew me Dy my irst name, and they really seemed to care. \s a matter of fact, several of them still ake the time to stop and talk to me when see them on campus. My second semester at USC was even letter than my first. I decided that I w^nt:d to become involved in a student organization, so I chose to write for the?school naper, The Gamecock. Through the paper I met so many nore people. Not only students, but great acuity members that I would have never lad the opportunity to meet if I had not , lecome involved in a student organization. The following semester 1 was chosen o be the news editor of The Gamecock, ind now I am editor in chief for the sumner. So I was wrong yet again. My fear of lot being able to become involved was alo put to rest. Even though I started my ife at USC as a sophomore, I was never a tep behind.
