Volunteers 17 to 24 years old are
finding that they don't have to
go abroad to do Peace Corps-like
work.
Described as being an urban Peace
Corp, City Year is a federally-funded
program sponsored by AmeriCorp.
City Year began in 1988 in Boston
and is now in 10 cities across the country
including Columbia.
City Year's major objectives are to
break down social barriers, inspire citizens
to service, build future leaders
and, most importantly, address the
needs of the community.
The name City Year originates from
the thought that in high school or college
you have freshman through senior
academic years. Everyone should have
a "city year" where they devote themselves
to community service.
Ten months, approximately a school
year, are taken off from school in exchange
for City Year. The year starts
in August and ends in June.
"The community becomes your
teacher, and other service organizations
become your classroom," said
Bryan Kost, director of recruitment for
City Year.
^ But unlike any academic setting,
City Year is a job. Participants, also
known as corp members, are required
to complete 1,700 hours of service or
nine hour days. They receive a stipend
of $150 per week, a complete Timberland
uniform (about $1000 in value)
and health insurance.
