Men's golf team finishes
second in rain-shortened SEC
Championships.
sports editor BRYAN JOHNSTON
The Gamecock men's golf team was
on the verge of making history, but
^ instead will have to settle for what might
have been.
After firing the best round of the
tournament, a 280, the lOth-ranked
Gamecocks stood in second place after
the second round of the SEC Men's Golf
Championships in Athens, Ga. South
Carolina was just one shot back of host
Georgia.
But because of rain, the final round
was cancelled, leaving a sour taste in
^ Carolina's mouth. Carolina's best previous

onships was their tie for fourth place
last year. 1
"I'm disappointed [about not play- \
ing the final round], but it's just the (
way it works," USC coach Puggy Blackmon
said. "One putt here or there was e
the difference, but everybody was in the s
same situation. There's nothing you can 1
do about it. The kids played as well as
they could play. I'm proud of them." s
Blackmon said the decision to can- 1
eel the final round was the correct call. (
"Absolutely, it was the right deci
sion," Blackmon said. "There was no s
way we could play the golf course and s
it be a fair round of golf. Everything 1
was under water." 1
But on a brighter note, sophomore s
Eric Ecker won the Individual Compe- i
tition with a two-round score of 136. i
Ecker fired a 66 Saturday, six-under \
par, to claim the lead and the champi- ]

Ecker and Thonmson also nicked
up some individual honors for their play
this year. Both were named to the firstteam
All-SEC Saturday by the conference.
Ecker was one of the SEC's top
players this season with four top-10 finishes
and seven top-20 finishes.
Ecker said he felt the team was
ready to challenge for the title in the final
round.
"We felt like we has some momentum
from yesterday, and we were looking
forward to playing today," Ecker
said.
Despite the disappointment of not
getting a chance to capture the title,
Blackmon was optimistic of the team's
future.
"We came up a shot short, but we'll
be back," Blackmon said. "We're a young
team."
