The University of South Carolina recognized
the accomplishments of its outstanding
graduate students in teaching,
research, scholarship and creativity during
the third annual Graduate Student
Day April 1.
"Graduate Student Day is the time
that the university celebrates the achievements
of its graduate students, the future
leaders in education, research, business
ana inaustry, engineering, tne arts, government,
the sciences, health and medicine,"
Marcia Welsh, dean of the Graduate
School, said.
"It is important to honor their hard
work in their academic pursuits, as well
as the contributions that they have made
to the university community," she said.
USC President John M. Palms
joined the university's deans and faculty
members to present more than 70 awards
to graduate students.
USC named Reina Pennington of
Ridgeway the Outstanding Graduate
Teaching Assistant. She is pursuing a doctoral
degree in history.
After earning a bachelor's degree from
the University of Louisville, Pennington
served in the Air Force for 10 years as
an intelligence officer before attending
USC to earn a master's degree in history
and a graduate certificate in women's studies.
"This is a great honor. It is particularly
meaningful to know that I have had
an impact on student's lives. That's what
teaching is all about," Pennington said.
She taught History 101 this year.
"History 101 is a required class, and
students don't always come in expecting
to enjoy it," Pennington said.
"But I think it is important to teach with
passion - passion about your subject ~
