To become a Na

outstandingly well on the SATs and
submit a written essay.
And USC would have had a higher
ranking if the standings only included
public schools. But since such
private schools as Harvard and Yale
are competing against USC, we fall
in the standings a bit. USC admitted
40 scholars in 1997 and this is
expected to grow.
Plus, a majority of National Merit
Scholars go to private schools,
which can give the university
even more of an ego boost.
USC is also planning to go higher.
The university will offer Carolina
Scholars, the school's highest
scholarship, to out-of-state students.
This is, in part, to expand its goal
of designing USC's undergraduate
program to be one of the top five
in the Southeast.

And when students have this
sort of competition, it will make
them want to work harder to get the
credit they've worked for and deserve.
Congratulations to the university
and to the students. It is the
students who give a reputation to
their school. And it seems that we
here at USC have given our school
a positive and respectable national
perspective.
Surely, if the university has
made such great strides in such a
small amount of time, as far as
the future goes, we have a lot to look
forward to and a lot to be proud of.

Nnw that the nlanet Earth is "rnn

the unknown. It is the only way we
will know.
With such successful events as
the Mars landing and the on-going

fascination with reaching the
stars is coming true. And it is important
that new projects be backed
and supported for the search for scientific

some time before interplanetary

But is all starts with us. Once
we start making more and more discoveries

will become less scary.
