a At least, that's what they
were told for hundreds
T of years by a male-dominated
culture. In this society it was not
proper for women to think for themselves
or speak for themselves, let alone
have a writing career.
It was not until the 19th century
that women began to be accepted and
| found success as authors, though only
then if they wrote the sentimental love
stories that other women wanted to
read.
Today female authors around the
world ei\joy the literary popularity, success
and prestige they had been denied
in the past. As part of Women's History
Month, we will profile a few of these
contemporary women writers and their
Dredecessors who Daved the wav.
If you haven't read a good book in
^ a while, you may want to check a few
" of these out.
Just as Jane Austen captivated her
audeince in Britain in the early 1800s
with her stories of romance, true love
and marrying rich, best-selling authors
such as Jackie Collips, Rosamunde
Pilcher and Mary Higgins Clark today
appeal to a large number of women looking
for a fast read filled with romance
and intrigue. Their novels, often turned
into made-for-TV movies, seem to fol^
low the same general themes, but some
" are worth a second look.
Pilcher, who sets her sweeping tales
of love and family exclusively in Britain,
will really break your heart with her
bestsellers, The Shell Seekers and September.
The Shell Seekers follows
tne lire 01 reneiope reeling, an old
woman who must reach into her past
to find out where the relationships in
her life went wrong. September is a sim^
ilar family drama set in Scotland.

Morrison is currently on the bestler
list for her newest book, Paradise,

Morrison's Song of Solomon (recently

sometimes funny, drama of Milkin

In her Nobel Prize-winning novel,
