For months now, there has been
much debate about the university's
decision to build a Greek Village
in the parking lot of Cliff Apartments.
The Greeks seem to be offended
that Cliff residents do not want to live
near them and the Housing Department
seems hesitant to alter their con
^ struction plans. Having lived in both
Bates House and Nada for two years, I
think, as a sort of outside observer, I
can shed some light on the plight of Cliff
residents.
This summer, I worked as a conversational
English partner with a Korean
man who was in his late 40s. He
was a businessman learning English
with EPI (English Program for Internationals).
He spoke about his wife, his

the stranger. Then something funny
happened.
I was feeling kinda down on Super
Bowl Sunday, as it was my birthday
and since I just transferred, I didn't
know who to celebrate with. It was my
22nd birthday, but had it been my 21st
I would have been in a really bad mood.

and optimism even I found hard
to embrace. This was the first time I

The first thing I was struck by was its
cleanliness. After living on-campus for
four years and visiting other dorms like
the Towers and Capstone, I had grown
accustomed to ill-kept places with the
lighting dim, the paint chipping, the
floor trashed, and the odd smells. The
residents of Cliff Apartments seem to
respect the place where they live. Every
time I went there, it was spotless.
When we talk about Cliff residents,
what we are talking about are residents
who are non-traditional students. In
a letter to the editor, Fred Von
Canon, residents manager of Cliff Apartments
says: "To qualify to live in Cliff

So out I ventured to Pickens Street.
Immediately when I walked in the door
I ieit a strange sensation come over me,
I wasn't sure what it was, but it felt kinda
weird.
There were about 20 people sitting
in a lobby talking. I thought I was
late and walked in at the end, making
a complete idiot of myself, but I was introduced
to the two pastors just as 1
had finished this thought.

Because they are unique, it is fitting
that they should live away from
the excesses of younger, traditional university
student life. It is fitting that
they should live in an environment
where they can raise their children,

study in quiet, and sleep in peace. And
this is why Cliff stands away from main
campus and traditional student areas.
Another thing that sets Cliff Apartments
apart from other dorms housed
by younger, traditional university students
is that Cliff Apartments is one of
the 12-month residences on campus.
This means that they do not go home
for Christmas or summer vacation- it
is home. The personal pride they take

Then we went into the church. Not
knowing the customs, I took the typical
approach and sat towards the back.
, I can honestly say that it was one of the
strangest feelings I have ever had in a
church.
I wasn't accustomed to the service.
Nor did I really know what was
i going to come next. So, as I listened and

place to celebrate my birthday.
After the service I talked for a few

in their living quarters is evident by
the lack of trash, the hushed hum of
nondescript noise, the respect with
which they greet each other- the currency
of twinkling eyes, bright smiles
and eager, "hello's." This community is
one of stability and quiet. How would
this change if Greeks were to move
into close proximity?
Can you imagine what bringing
Greeks into this environment would be
like? I can't either. But if what I see
passing through the Quad is any indication-Greeks
drunkenly dragging
themselves from Five Points-I am
frightened. Can you imagine the effect
drunken Greeks would have upon the
children playing in the playground?
Can you imagine the effect rowdy
Greeks would have on the quiet, studious
atmosphere of Cliff residents?
Can you imagine, indeed, the effect

gregants before leaving. I had to at least
watch the Super Bowl. My friend came
over and I told him of my experience.
He was interested but not thrilled.
I ventured back to the PALM Center
the next weekend, and what did you
know? It was as if everyone was waiting
for me to come back through those
doors. I was very comfortable and happy
that I had chosen God to blow out
my candles with the prior week.
I'll continue to go back to church
and continue to grow, both as a USC
student and as a child of God.
