BLAME IT ON ME Alana Davis
Ani DiFranco fans have the right to
be skeptical of anyone who does a cover
of one of DiFranco's best songs and
releases it as his or her first single. Love
it or hate it, Davis' version of "32 Fla
vors totally reworks DiFranco s song,
something every remake should do.
-v Ironically, Alana Davis' best tunes are
% her own. Blame it On Me is loaded with
good songs that blend the best aspects
of R&B, folk and rock music. One
listen to the album, especially the songs
"Murder," "Turtle" and "Free," will put
all doubts to rest. An excellent album.

STUFF Holly McNarland
McNarland's first full-length CD
has a lot more attitude than her haunt%
ingly beautiful 1995 EP, Sour Pie.
Whereas Sour Pie featured only slow,

introspective songs, Stuff has aggressive
tunes such as "Elmo," "Twisty Mirror"
and "The Box." Still, McNarland
is best when she slows things down in
the songs "U.F.O," "Mystery Song" and
the irresistible "Porno Mouth." If McNarland
would remember that she
makes a better Sarah McLachlan than
an Alanis Morrisette, Stuff would have
been 10 times better. Rating: C
BALANCE OF THE FORCE Boymerang
While many music magazines
continue to praise Roni Size for his double
CD New Forms, they often overlook
Boymerang and his equally brilliant
drum'n'bass CD, Balance of the Force.
Boymerang is the latest in a line of Astralwerks
artists (Chemical Brothers,
Photek, Source Direct) who push the
boundaries of electronic music. Balance
of the Force is more than 70 minutes
of some of the most challenging
drum'n'bass music around. "Soul
Beat Runna" is simply amazing. A musthave
for any fan of electronic music.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS soundtrack
Any soundtrack that has artists
such as Pulp, Reef, Poe, The Verve Pipe
and The Grateful Dead is bound to be
a hit. This CD for the movie staring
Gwyenth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke is
a solid collection of songs. Two of the
best tracks are from former "grunge"
band leaders. Ex-Soundgarden frontman
Chris Cornell revisits his band's
work with "Sunshowerand Scott Weiland
sounds nothing like Stone Temple
Pilots on "Lady, Your Roof Brings
Me Down." But the best song is Tori
Amos' contribution, "Siren." Rating; B

Imagine Isaac Hanson (you know,
the oldest one) as a 30-year-old wrestler
who wears clothes that make him look
like a rejected superhero on drugs. Now,
imagine him making a comeback in music
under the name "Thor" and releasing
a hard rock album with his wife,
Cherry Bomb. Now, imagine the album
featuring songs called "Thunderhawk,"
"Dogz," "Start Raising Hell" and "Megatron."
Now, imagine something that
sounds 100 times worse. That's what
Thor sounds like. Rating: F
