second concert in January
The Carolina Chamber Players
will be presenting their second concert
of the 97-98 series 3 p.m. Jan. 4,1998
at the South Carolina State Museum
Auditorium.
The concert will feature the music
of Leos Janacek. Hius String Quartet
#2, "Intimate Letters," will be
performed as well as the Sextet for
Winds, "Youth."

Since the Puppet Regime was started
in the late 1980s by a USC theater
student, USC has experienced alternative
theater difficult to find elsewhere.

"When you come to a Puppet
Regime show, you never know what
you're going to get," said Meredith Turner,
senior Puppet Regime member.
The Puppet Regime, which is run
by students, has the purpose of giving
more diverse theater opportunities to
undergraduates.
This semester, the group gave USC
Beyond Therapy and subllrbia, which
just finished before Thanksgiving break.
The Puppet Regime was one of the
first theater groups in the United States
to get the rights to subUrbia, which is
new and right off Broadway, Puppet
Regime President Amy Dietz said.

to find their place in that world, two
tasks that carry the potential for conflict.
Turner, who directed subUrbia,
was active in the Puppet Regime her
freshman year, but she stepped out for
two years. H
When she got involved again her
senior year, it was because she "thought
that Puppet Regime was drifting away
from its original intent of providing students
with alternative theater."
She thought she should "step in"
and work on producing a "vintage Puppet
Regime show," she said.
Puppet Regime members like their
"experimental theater organization" because
it gives students more opportunities
to work with eveiy facet of a show,
instead of confining each member to
onejob.

"It's less political," said Ralph
D'Ambrose, junior journalism major.
"You never know who's going to be directing."
D'Ambrose joined the Puppet
Regime his sophomore year because "I
hadn't had much luck on the main
stage," he said. Since then, he has performed
in four Puppet Regime productions,
including The Rocky Horror Pic

"Puppet Regime is unique because
it offers students the opportunity to
write,, direct, star in and design without
having to get final approval from a
faculty adviser," Turner said.
Dietz has been in many Puppet
Regime shows since first joining in her
freshman year in 1993.
"It's real fun and gives you op
portunmes to ao everytmng on a snow,
instead of just one role," she said. "We
build our own sets, design our own lighting,
everything."
Dietz said the Regime also gives
students the opportunity to do shows
they normally wouldn't be able to do in
other theater organizations.

"The shows have to do more with
college audiences," she said.
Puppet Regime shows have contained
nudity, profanity and the exploration
of issues that are considered
important among the college-age population.
And its being in a blackbox theater
makes the show more intimate, Dietz
said.
"The audience feels like part of the
show," she said.
The Regime will have next semester's
shows again in Benson Theater,
but after the spring, it's possible

because Benson is part of the area that
will be excavated to make room for the
new Greek Village.
"It is true that Benson Theater is
slated for demolition," Puppet Regime
faculty adviser James Hunter said.
However, the exact date for the Regime's
relocation has not been determined.
The theater department is working
with USC to find another location,
and "it is actually working quite
well," Hunter said.
The Booker T. Washington basement,
which now houses part of the art
department, is a probable new location
for the Regime.
However, lio decision has been
made on whether the art department
is leaving that space, Hunter said.
As for next semester, the Puppet
Regime has "several things in the
works," Dietz said. The group will meet
at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 12 in Longstreet Theater
to decide on next semester's productions.
The meeting is open to anyone interested
in being part of the Puppet
Regime. No experience is necessary,
and the group can always use new members.
