new album, Death Metal, takes the
genre in a new direction, fusing melodic
speed riffs with the traditional inI

The opening track, "Of Fire,"
wastes no time in getting into the intensity.
The speedy, melodic guitar line
in this song is reminiscent of an oldschool
thrash riff by Exodus or Pantera.
"Misanthropic," the third track,
was actually released as a single priLe

|iP^l| These cuts, along
mmmj with "You Must Love
Me" and "Rap Game/
Crack Game," do nothing but disappoint
me.
Eventually, Jay-Z's In My Lifetime
Vol.1 just becomes background music
full of boredom and, in the long run, an
unengaging production.
To many, Jay-Z's first album, Reasonable
Doubt, was one of the best of
1996. In My Lifetime Vol. I is close, but
definitely no Garcia Vega.
And during a year dominated by
the Wu, maybe Jay-Z's third time will
be a charm. Word up.
"MiaanfVirnnir" is nne nf t.hp hest
tracks on the album, which would
explain why it was prereleased as a
single. Throughout the rest of the CD,
Dismember refuses to abate the intensity
factor, yet every song is very
well-crafted, which is a rarity in today's
death-metal scene.
Death Metal eventually found its
way into WUSC's rotation, where it
has remained for about a month. It
even charted on WUSC's Top 40 album
list, coming in at No. 40.
Since the rotation is comprised of
more than 200 CDs at any given time,
this is more significant than it may initially
appear. All in all, Death Metal
ranks as one of the best metal albums
released this year. A must-have for
hard music fans.

KMFDM (wax trax/TVT)
QQQQ /2 (out of five stars)
When you begin to talk about
KMFDM, you first must get over the
initial "what does their name mean"
discussion. ^
For the record,
KMFDM doesn't
stand for "Kill
Mother F*cking Lg^lj
Depesche Mode." 11
The name, when ^ \1
translated from
German, means
^no pity for the mamotto
that the ^J
members of the
band have been living
by for the last 13
years by putting out 10 albums and 21
EPs with hardly any commercial airplay
at all. The band never sold out,,
signed to a major label and put out fluff,
as so many bands do.
Instead, the band has remained on
Wax Trax through thick and thin and
stayed true to its sound. Now KMFDM
is back after a six-month hiatus after
their last EP and a little more than a
year after their last LP.
I know what you're saying: Sasha,
En Esch and company are getting old
and slowing down a bit. But don't worry,
the newest KMFDM album is definitely
one of the best albums the band
has put out in years.
Unlike its last full-length, Xtort,
which was to be the band's "breakthrough
album," KMFDM has abandoned
its experiment of adopting a live,
guitar-heavy sound. Instead, the band
has gone back to what it does best: using
guitar samples.

The album contains "classic"
KMFDM dance-anthem tracks such as
"Megalomaniac," "Lied Und Elend" and
"Down and Out," as well as sludgier
guitar-driven tracks such as "Torture,"
"Spit Sperm" and "Waste."
As always, KMFDM does an amazing
iob with its music from its samnles
(including some horns) and live instrumentation
to its vocals and processing,
creating tracks that are incredibly
layered and dynamic.
It must be noted that this album
contains an amazing array of guest
artists: Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Raymond
Watts (PIG), Tim Skold (Skold), Abby
Travis (Beck, Elastica), William Rieflin
(Ministry) and

(Treponem Pal).
