said. "That kickoff return happened
to do it, and I thought that would give
us the momentum to really try to put
them out of the game."
The TD return fueled the Gamecocks'
defense, not their offense. Two
Florida possessions after the Williams'
TD, free safety Arturo Freeman picked
off his second pass of the game giving
him six interceptions on the year.
With the interception, USC had
the ball on the UF 25-yard line but was
unable to come away with any points
when place-kicker Steve Florio had his
40-yard field goal blocked. On Florida's
ensuing set of downs, the Gators fumbled
the ball, and safety Ben Washington
recovered the loose pigskin on
the UF 23-yard line. However, the
Gamecocks, who missed a 34-yard field
goal, were not able to capitalize on
the turnover.
With the two missed field field
goals, the momentum gained by
Williams' return was lost. Carolina fell
even further in the hole when Florida
added another TD late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter began to the
chagrin of USC with Gamecock quarterback
Victor Penn, who took over for
the injured Anthony Wright, fumbling
the ball. The football was snatched off
the ground by a Florida player who rumbled
23 yards for a TD.
After an unsuccessful set of downs
by Carolina, Florida ran the ball into
the end zone from 13 yards out to go
ahead 34-14. USC was quick to answer
the Gators' score when wide receiver
Jermale Kelly caught an 11-yard TD
pass.
Kelly's TD increased his streak
of games with a TD reception to six and
placed him into the school record books
for the most TD catches (10) by a freshman.

Florida had the ball on the USC
44-yard line. Then, Gator running back
Fred Taylor ran 44 yards for a TD.
Taylor finished the day with 170

USC fumbled the following kickoff,
the Gators managed to score once
more with 34 seconds remaining in the
game.
In the first half, the 80,072 spectators

that the whole Gamecock squad must
step up their play to move up in the
SEC.
"I thought Vic played well for his
first ballgame," Scott said. "Certainly,
ne wouia nice to nave a couple tnrows
back, but he made some plays out there
too.
"We played them better than that
score indicates. We had our opportunities
in the third and didn't take advantage
of them. If we did, then we
might get there [the top of the SEC}. I
told our players until we win these kinds
of games, our program is not going to
get there.
"And I think that's the frustrating
part about it. You play a national championship
team, and you're right in that
ballgame, and then you don't make the
plays to be able to compete and finish
the game."

Georgia was led by Vis, who had a

Since this game was the last regularson
match, it certainly wasn't the way

Despite Carolina's upsetting loss
to nationally ranked Florida, there
or J j./?
were some oiiensive ana aeiensive
highlights.
Namely, the play of free safety
Arturo Freeman and red-shirt freshman
wide receiver Jermale Kelly.
. "I thought we had some good performances
by some individuals out
there, but it's very disappointing the
way we let that ballgame get away
from us," Head Football Coach
Brad Scott said.
"I thought Arturo, coming down
with two big interceptions there, that
really puts him in strong position here
in our conference, I think in interceptions
for a season," Scott said. "He
gave us big opportunities, and he's
playing very well for us down the
stretch."
Freeman's two interceptions gave
him six on the year and 10 in his career.
"I just thank God for them," Freeman
said about his two interceptions.
"I really needed them. It really doesn't
matter.
. "It really hurts even more when
you get a lot of interceptions and you
? still lose because to me, all I wanted
to do was get a pick for a touchdown."
As for Kelly, he surpassed Zola
Davis' record of nine touchdown catches
in one season by a freshman.
Kelly moved ahead of Davis on an 11yard
pass from quarterback Victor
Penn.
"Jermale made a big touchdown
catch there at the end of the game,"
Scott said.

Kelly said.
Now, South Carolina looks to
build on the individual performances
and create some great team performances.
"We've just got to rebuild and
just build on those things that happened,
the positive things," Freeman
said. "Take the positive out of the
whole game. Build off Victor Penn
starting his first whole game.
"We've got one game left in the
season, so we've just got to stay positive
and stay focused and get ready
